Chael Sonnen: UFC Star Makes Right Decision to Deny WWE Rumors
Ever since Chael Sonnen lost to Anderson Silva at UFC 148 on Saturday night, there have been plenty of rumors about his future, including ones linking him to the WWE. Sonnen made the wise move and quickly denied any connection with the professional wrestling company.
MMAJunkie.com passed on comments Sonnen made during an appearance on Fuel TV. Along with saying he wouldn't appeal the decision from Saturday's fight, he also put to rest any connection between him and the WWE. He said he's just a fan.
Putting that out in public right away should put an end to any speculation. Whenever an athlete lets something like that go without responding, it tends to take on a live of its own. Sonnen saved himself some headaches with a prompt response.
After all, he should remain focused on the UFC. He said he's going to take some time before deciding whether to continue fighting or end his octagon career, but he still has a lot left in the tank. A loss to one of the most dominant MMA stars of all time isn't something to get down about.
Who knows what would have happened in the fight if he didn't go for a high-risk maneuver that caused him to lose his balance and allowed Silva to gain control. He was never able to recover, and Silva picked up the knockout.
That said, it was still a bout for the UFC middleweight championship which means he was only one step from the top. He's still got plenty of talent. It's not like he's a struggling fighter that would be risking his legacy by fighting again.
Sonnen should be able to land another high-profile bout which means another big payday. It's hard to pass that up when he's just six months removed from a win over Michael Bisping.
Even if he did have some type of interest in the WWE, it will still be there once his MMA career officially comes to an end. But that seems like a long shot given his comments although the conspiracy theorists will argue that's exactly what Vince McMahon would tell him to say.
For everybody else, it's clear Sonnen is choosing between UFC or retirement. Based on his willingness to drum up hype and overall fighting ability, most fans are hoping he hangs around for at least a while longer.
It's all in Sonnen's hands now.
