MLB All Star Game: Why the Game Needs to Be Changed

Jacob BornJun 6, 2018

The MLB All-Star Game has been one of the most love/hate relationships in all of sports. Fans love to come to the games to see their favorite stars play together for one game.

But no matter what the sport, there is always one player who is playing that doesn't deserve so, or one player who was snubbed. The game itself sometimes doesn't even feel like a game but rather showboating offensive talent.

But for MLB's All-Star Game, the game itself is the problem.

Ever since the 2002 All-Star Game, the winner has received home field advantage for the World Series, due to a tie that year.

By creating this rule, the All-Star game would mean something to the players, meaning they would treat it like an actual game. The media would also enjoy this rule because fans of baseball want to see who will get home field advantage for the World Series.

It seems like a good way to fix the problems of the All-Star game, but it just makes the situation worse.

The players still treat this game like an All-Star game. Only one of the teams in their league will make it to the World Series, so the majority of the players are just playing in the game because it's an all-star game.

Therefore many players, if any at all, are not going to be playing as intensely in the All-Star game as if they were for their own ball club. They know that they are in the game because they are the best players on the field, which is why they would not make a play that could injure them long-term in a game that means nothing.

The managers also have the mindset of the players. They want to play each player on their roster, so they will make substitutions throughout the game, especially for pitchers.

Pitchers go maybe three innings, if they are they are lucky, and then get yanked. If this game truly meant something, managers would have no problem letting their all-star ace go eight or nine innings.

What's wrong with the game is the league trying to make the game bigger than what it really is.

It is not supposed to decide who gives home field advantage for the World Series. The team that had the better regular season should get it and it will give teams incentive to close down the stretch. Let the players have their fun, and make it a game strictly about having fun.

But if the league is so adamant about making this game matter then change the mentality of the managers and the players so they believe the game will matter.

But until one of these two ends are met, the game will still be stuck in the love/hate relationship, and it will continue to anger the players and fans alike.
