Summer Olympics: Hope Solo's Failed Drug Test Much Ado About Nothing

Hope Solo failed a drug test, and the world subsequently freaked out. 

The Associated Press reported Solo had failed a recent drug test and received a public warning because of it. 

For those uninitiated, this is like getting spanked by your parents in the back of a K-Mart: the humiliation alone is to serve the lesson. 

The US Women's National Team goalkeeper was found to have tested positive for Canrenone in a June 15 urine test. 

The United States Anti-Doping Agency had this to say about the substance.

Canrenone is classified as a Specified Substance, and therefore the presence of Canrenone in an athlete’s sample can result in a reduced sanction. Solo was taking a prescribed medication, in a therapeutic dose under the care of a physician. The medication when metabolized resulted in the adverse analytical finding. 

"

As for the fallout, the failed test is getting heavy play in major sports sites. Deadspin went with the headline, Hope Solo Failed a Drug Test. Big Lead Sports managed to work extras into their headline.

Solo had a statement to explain her situation, via ESPN.

"

I took a medication prescribed by my personal doctor for pre-menstrual purposes that I did not know contained a diuretic. Once informed of this fact, I immediately cooperated with USADA and shared with them everything they needed to properly conclude that I made an honest mistake, and that the medication did not enhance my performance in any way.

As someone who believes in clean sport, I am glad to have worked with USADA to resolve this matter and I look forward to representing my country at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. 

"

It's only normal for people to stop dead in their tracks when they hear the words failed drug test in relation to a high-profile athlete. 

The steroid era in baseball created a world of cynics, and we will believe just about any superstar is using PED's, only needing to a read a brief headline to be certain. 

Hold the proverbial horses because sometimes the smoke doesn't lead to fire, and the athlete is just a victim of circumstance. 

Call off the hoopla. There is really nothing to see here, and that is a very good thing.
