What's the Least Important Position in the NFL?
This is obvious, isn't it? The least important position in the NFL is quarterback.
OK, that's in Bizzaro World. Back in this dimension, we all know that the quarterback is the most important position on the field in the NFL. So what should be considered the least important position?
NFL lead writer Josh Zerkle and I tackle the question in the video above. While Josh goes with certain specialists, I dive headlong into what is sure to be a controversial pick.

It is, of course, difficult to discount any player on the football field, because so many of the positions are dependent on one another. That's what makes football the ultimate team game.
The wide receiver is important in today's game, but without a quarterback to deliver the football and an offensive line to give that quarterback time, even a premier wide receiver can disappear on Sundays. Just ask Steve Smith how he felt prior to Cam Newton showing up in Carolina.
On the other side of the ball, for the longest time, the middle linebacker in the traditional 4-3 defense was the glamour position on defense. Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Sam Huff and, more recently, guys like Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher were the poster boys of what it looked like to be the most important guy in the defensive huddle.
In today's game, however, the importance of the 4-3 middle linebacker has been lessened greatly by the advent of the multiple wide receiver sets we see throughout the league and the pass-happy ways of NFL offensive coordinators.
Rarely are middle linebackers asked to scrape and explode as in the old days. Instead, defensive coordinators are asking them to cover tight ends and running backs, if not taking them off the field all together on passing downs.
These are just a few examples of the lack of importance of various positions. Check out the video, and then let us know if either Josh or I got it right or if we've completely overlooked another position that should be deemed the least important in today's NFL.
