Luka Modric: Chelsea Must Top Real Madrid's Offer for Croatian Midfielder

If Chelsea have any hopes of rising in the ranks of the English Premier League next season then they must pull out all of the stops in order to top Real Madrid's latest offer for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric.

According to the UK's Mail Online, Real Madrid are confident that they will pry Modric away from his current English club now that they have thrown Ricardo Carvalho into the mix.

Modric scored five goals and recorded four assists in all competitions with Spurs last season. The Croatian star is just 26 years old and has loads of potential as a crafty creator in the midfield and final third.

After finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, Chelsea desperately need to add a young star to their midfield if they are to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United in 2012-13.

Though they shocked Barcelona en route to the UEFA Champions League final and ultimately triumphed over Bayern Munich in the championship match, Chelsea never really threatened all that often with an elusive presence in the midfield.

Modric would add another dimension to Chelsea's midfield, one that could put them over the top and provide them with a dependable pro for the next decade. 

Modric is a key piece for the future and a playmaking force in the midfield. If Chelsea want to contend in the EPL next season and beyond then they must do everything in their power to one-up Real Madrid in the pursuit of Luka Modric. 

If Chelsea must offer up some pieces a la Real Madrid in order to acquire Modric, then so be it. Chelsea is a proud football club, and one that will be under immense pressure next season to continue its unthinkable success in 2012.
