Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 2 Results: Is Silva Unbeatable?

Kyle SymesJun 7, 2018

Anderson Silva didn't quite kick Chael Sonnen's teeth in at UFC 148, but the victory proved emphatic nonetheless.

After surviving a dominating round from Sonnen to begin the night, Silva stuffed a Sonnen takedown in the second round and went on to finish the challenger with a flurry of punches. The two men reconciled with each other following the fight and most figure it will be the end of perhaps the best rivalry in UFC history.

Without Sonnen nipping at his heels, Silva is suddenly left with a number of new faces like Mark Munoz and Michael Bisping waiting to challenge the UFC Middleweight Champion. Although new faces will bring new matchups, many fans have to be left wondering one question.

With his biggest challenger vanquished, is Silva unbeatable?

Of course the logical answer is no, Silva can be beaten. His record shows it, as "The Spider" doesn't sport a zero in the loss column. Any man can be beaten on any given night, such is the way MMA works.

But with six years of dominance, it would seem as if the Brazilian is untouchable.

For years, fans have been pointing to a strong wrestler as the one to end Silva's reign of terror. Sonnen possessed that skill and nearly put together two perfect game plans en route to defeating the champion on two separate occasions. Yet, Sonnen was unable to secure the victory in both attempts.

Silva has faced a number of men proficient in a number of other areas as well. He's taken out jiu-jitsu black belts like Thales Leites and Demian Maia. Silva has defeated standup specialists like Vitor Belfort in the first round and defeated another world-class wrestler in Dan Henderson.

We keep pointing to the next guy as having the traits to dethrone the champion, and each time we are left searching for answers. Throughout the years, Silva has left us both speechless and confused, as the champion continues to find a new way to leave an impression on fans.

Sonnen was viewed as the kryptonite to Silva, yet, the challenger failed to capitalize on having the most success any opponent has ever had against the champion. If Sonnen and a picture-perfect game plan can't defeat the champion, who can?

Silva is a man, like any other fighter, and can be defeated. But with each title defense it seems more and more likely that "The Spider" will continue to reign over the middleweight division until he decides to hang up the gloves.
