Greenbrier Classic 2012 Leaderboard: Odds for Players Still in Contention

Timothy RappJul 8, 2012

Sure, the Greenbrier Classic has already lost its three biggest names, as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk all failed to make the cut.

Ouch.

But that doesn't mean the final day of play won't be exciting. Webb Simpson is the favorite heading into Sunday with a two-stroke lead, but there are plenty of players nipping at his heels. Alongside a look at the leaderboard, let's predict the odds of winning for the players at the top.

Odds

Webb Simpson: 3-1

He's coming off a victory at the US Open, and he was in contention in this tournament last year before shooting three bogeys in the back nine.

In other words, he knows the course and he knows how to handle pressure. It's hard to imagine him blowing the lead on Sunday.

He also has 12 top-10 finishes in the past year, the most on the PGA Tour and indicative of a player entering his prime. I wouldn't bet against him.

The Field: 5-1

Let's be honest here—the rest of the contenders at the Greenbrier Classic aren't exactly a "Who's Who" of the golfing elite.

Troy Kelly has never finished better than 37th at a PGA tournament. Ken Duke has five top-10 finishes this year and has finished in second three times in his career, but he's never won a PGA Tour event. Charlie Beljan is a rookie.

Anyone of the players chasing Simpson is capable of winning this tournament. They're professionals for a reason, after all. But the odds remain stacked in Simpson's favor given the competition, at least in my opinion.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets dominate like the Williams sisters at Wimbledon.
