Silva vs Sonnen 2 Results: Dana White 'I Don't Have to Sell Chael Sonnen'
With his second loss to Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen finds himself in a weird spot in his career. He's the consensus No. 2 middleweight in the world, but just can't find it in himself to beat the champion.
There's obviously concerns now for the UFC as well.
They have this extremely charismatic fighter who is great with the media and cutting a promo who just spent the past two years claiming to be the best in the world. Dana White spoke to this after the UFC 148 post-fight press conference.
"We don't sell guys. I'm not trying to sell Chael Sonnen. I'm not trying to tell you guys that Chael talks really well, he's funny, buy his fights. You walked out of here tonight and you either like him or you don't. You either want to see him fight again or you don't. But again, make no mistake. What sold this fight was the first fight. You know what I mean," White told Bleacher Report after the UFC 148 post-fight press conference.
He's right. As a fan of the sport, I want to see this fight not because Chael made various ridiculous claims about Anderson but because he performed so well at UFC 117 two years ago. It's not like his shtick was unique for this fight either.
""Chael said a lot of funnier sh*t the first time. Remember the first press conference we did? It was f***ing crazy. He was saying funny sh*t and it was like, 'okay, this guy is saying a bunch of funny sh*t, now let's watch him get his head kicked to another f***ing planet' right? And that's not what f***ing happened.
"He went out and dominated this guy who's never been dominated in the UFC for five full rounds and [Silva] pulls out one of the most shocking wins ever."
"
He closed by adding, "that Anderson pulls that off and that's what sold this fight. That's the reason that people got into this fight and were into it. It wasn't because Chael's funny and smart and talks well. That doesn't hurt. It doesn't suck."
