Wimbledon Tennis 2012 Final: Roger Federer Will Kill UK Hopes of Local Champ

Brian MaziqueJul 8, 2012

The All England crowd will be pulling for Andy Murray to end Britain's drought, but Roger Federer has his eyes on personal history. I'm betting that personal history wins out.

It's been 76 years since an Brit won Wimbledon, but Federer is playing so well right now. He's destined to make it 77.

Federer is looking to tie the Wimbledon record with seven titles. He would also regain the No. 1 ranking in the world for the first time since 2010 with a win.

At age 30, Federer will cement his greatness by capturing another title. Murray is only 25 years old, and though he'll certainly give his all, he has time to achieve his moment of glory.

Federer doesn't have that luxury.

That sense of immediacy will help him. He has been playing desperate all tournament. He's been more aggressive with his second serves and taking more risks in general.

That tells me he understands the urgency to take advantage of this opportunity. Once Rafael Nadal was eliminated, Federer's confidence had to go up a notch.

The second confirmation was his rebound from a slow start in the third round against Julien Benneteau. Fed dropped the first two sets, but he came back to take the last three from Benneteau.

This was his wake-up call.

Defeating Novak Djokovic was the latest piece of validation for the title run.

Djokovic is the No. 1 player in the world, but he didn't represent the same type of impediment for Federer—especially on grass. I fully expected him to knock-off Djokovic, and I predicted he'd take him in four sets.

The final is a bit of a wild card. He is almost even with Murray head-to-head. Murray has a slight edge (8-7), but Federer has swept him (2-0) in Grand Slams. This will come down to desire, and at this point, Federer will want it more.

Federer will win in four sets over Murray to capture his seventh Wimbledon, 17th Grand Slam and his place as the greatest player in history.
