Adrian Peterson: Vikings RB Reportedly Arrested in Houston for Resisting Arrest

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson ran afoul of the law on Friday night and is sitting in city jail while waiting to post, or be released, on a $1,000 bond after being arrested for resisting arrest. The original arrest charge is unclear at this point.

UPDATE: Monday, July 9 at 11:04 a.m ET by John Rozum

Adrian Peterson and Roger Clemens have something in common, attorney Rusty Hardin. According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN:

Filed to ESPN: Adrian Peterson has hired high-profile attorney Rusty Hardin to represent him after weekend arrest. Hardin was Clemens attny.

This whole situation with Peterson has surely gotten intense as well as interesting. Now with a well-known attorney in the mix, the intrigue has been significantly enhanced. After all, Hardin won the Clemens case regarding performance enhancing drugs, so clearly Peterson is not playing softball by any means.

Adrian Peterson has taken to Twitter to cast out a comment or two following his arrest. He starts it off with a little quote from Winston Churchill, who provided quotes for every occasion.

"

“A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.”WC

— Adrian Peterson (@AdrianPeterson) July 8, 2012"

He then backed up the quote with a little comment of his own alluding to the fact that there may be some untruths fluttering about.

"

Thank you for waiting for the facts. Truth will surface.

— Adrian Peterson (@AdrianPeterson) July 8, 2012"

You're welcome, Adrian, and I honestly am supremely interested

Just below, is an update discussing some video of this incident that was posted by TMZ. It is not the most revealing video, but it does offer a bit of an inside look at the situation.

The video has made its way to Youtube, which consequently has led it here.

TMZ has posted some video of the arrest. There is not a lot to the video. It is a few seconds of Peterson getting cuffed, or just after/before getting cuffed.

The end of the video is the police shutting the doors on patrons, especially the one filming the video.

TMZ also reports that Peterson was "quite drunk" but they certainly didn't come to that conclusion just from the video they posted.

UPDATE: Saturday, July 7 at 5:39 p.m. ET by Justin Welton

Details of Peterson's arrest have been released, according to Carol Christian of Chron.com. Here are some of the details the Houston Police Department have released.

After being told numerous times that the bar was closing down by an unnamed officer, Peterson reportedly pushed the officer in the shoulder which caused the officer to "stumble," according to Christian.

"

"The officer asked Peterson's group to leave and turned away," [department spokesman] Kese Smith said. “That’s when Peterson told the officer that the group had heard him the first time and pushed the officer in the shoulder, causing him to stumble,” Smith said.

"

Three officers in total were involved in the arrest after Peterson resisted, according to Christian.

2012 hasn't been the best year for Peterson, who tore his ACL and MCL during the regular season and was arrested Friday night. It wasn't the worst thing that could happen in a club early in the morning, but it wasn't the best either.

UPDATE: Saturday, June 7 at 1:55 p.m. ET by Richard Langford

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported hearing from a source that the incident in question was captured on surveillance video. He also reports some details of Peterson's arrest gleaned from this source.

Florio reports the source told him that Peterson, his girlfriend and some family were at a Houston nightclub. It was closing time, and the police entered and were instructing the patrons to leave. Peterson wanted to get some water and an officer told him no.

Florio then states that it is "believed" that Peterson was walking out with a bouncer when an officer jumped on his back, and the arrest was made. After the officer who jumped on his back got an assist from his fellow officers.

Keep in mind that these come from a source, and that it is just one side of the story, but this side of the story is not too favorable to the HPD. In this accounting, Peterson did not seem hostile and he was on his way of leaving the scene, and a cop jumped on the back of a mulit-million dollar running back who is nursing a surgically repaired knee.

Also, the Vikings have released a completely typical statement. CBS Sports' Will Brinson passed this along:

"

Vikings spokesman on AP: "We are aware of the situation. We will withhold further comment until more information is known."

— Will Brinson (@willbrinson) July 7, 2012"

It will be interesting to see what the Vikings statement is if there is footage from the surveillance camera backing the story from Florio's source. Let's just say, the HPD is likely hoping that Peterson's knee did not suffer any setbacks.

-------- end of update -----------

The Houston Chronicle's Jerome Solomon passed along that the Houston Police Department said Peterson was still in custody, and he also tweeted out the news:

"

Breaking news: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson arrested last night in Houston for resisting arrest by HPD. Bond set at $1,000. #hounews

— Jerome Solomon (@JeromeSolomon) July 7, 2012"

He added the "official" word to the charges in this tweet posted shortly after the breaking news:

"

Houston Police Department's official listing for Peterson's offense: resisting arrest/search-unclassified. #hounews

— Jerome Solomon (@JeromeSolomon) July 7, 2012"

There appears to be no details of the arrest available at this time.

Peterson will find himself with extra time to deal with any court dates or legal ramifications that may arise from this situation. He tore the ACL and MCL in a game against the Redskins last December.

While Vikings coach Leslie Frazier alluded to Peterson playing in Week 1 and "chomping at the bit" to get on the field for their training camp, which starts on July 21, it is highly unlikely that he will be ready to return by then. It typically takes 12 months to recover from this kind of injury.

Due to his injury, Peterson's offseason had already been full of speculation. But that is nothing compared to the kind of questions and media onslaught he is likely to face following this arrest.
