Eric Gordon Would Be "Disappointed" If Hornets Matched Phoenix's Offer

Danny WebsterJun 7, 2018

Eric Gordon has had a very interesting past five days.

He's met with numerous teams, has been offered a max deal by the Phoenix Suns and is now currently training with the men's national team here in Las Vegas for the next week.

But the restricted free agent sharp-shooter has been made well aware that the New Orleans Hornets are prepared to match any offer thrown their way, and as expected, he's not pleased about it.

"It feels like I'm being taken advantage of because I'm restricted," Gordon said following Friday's practice at Mendenhall Center at UNLV. "I would be disappointed if (the Hornets) matched the offer."

Gordon went on to say that New Orleans management did not call him on the first day of free agency while he was at home in Indiana.

"If they were so interested, there wouldn't have been no tour," Gordon said. "Phoenix just showed a lot more interest, overall, and definitely in how they negotiated. I don't know what New Orleans' plans are for me. There are no negotiations right now...They drafted another shooting guard, a combo guard like me, which tells me they have another plan."

That other shooting guard is Duke guard Austin Rivers, who was taken with the 10th pick overall of the NBA Draft a couple of weeks ago. He, along with No. 1 pick Anthony Davis, have created some buzz and have brought hope to the once-dead Hornets franchise.

"I was surprised with the pick for Austin," Gordon said. "Really surprised."

But right now, Gordon's main focus is trying to help the USA win another gold medal.

"I know it's risky (playing during contract negotiations)," he said. "I'm just happy to be out here playing with these guys."

Gordon also mentioned that he feels "really good" and that he's 100 percent healthy going into the summer games. Playing for the Hornets or the Suns is the furthest thing from his mind.

"If they match, I have to play basketball," he said.
