What the Experts are Saying
With so much hype surrounding the main event, all the experts are chiming in.
ESPN's Brett Okamoto believes that Chael Sonnen is a bad matchup for Anderson Silva and that the challenger will pull off the upset.
"If styles didn’t make fights, making a case for No. 1 middleweight contender Chael Sonnen against reigning champion Anderson Silva this weekend at UFC 148 would be difficult. Silva is widely regarded as the best fighter to ever live. Sonnen is a high-level athlete, but his résumé doesn’t compare to Silva’s and it likely never will.
"
To dismiss Sonnen’s chances in this fight, though, as so many seem to be doing despite how successful he was in their first meeting, is to somewhat forget what the entire UFC was built around.
Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim believes Sonnen is doing far too much talking prior to the fight.
"The storyline will have a superhero ring to it, good trumping bad; afterwards the defeated villain may even admit the error in his ways. (“Anderson won my respect tonight,” you almost hear Sonnen already admitting to Joe Rogen.) All will be right with the world. We’ve seen this movie before. But we will also wonder what the fight would have looked like had Sonnen simply kept his mouth shut and gone about his job
"
Prediction: Silva by a knockout.
Wertheim is right about Sonnen talking too much leading up to the fight, but it has also distracted from how dominant Silva truly is.
The Spider will be looking to prove that his first matchup with Sonnen was a fluke and that this fight will not be as close as many believe. Silva will not let this bout go the distance.
