Remember The Titans: A Movie That I Cherish

Rohini IyerFeb 16, 2009

I have a confession to make before I delve myself into this article. I do not follow American Football and even though I am a big fan of this film so much so that I have watched it over three times [In my case I never watch a movie more than twice; its the end of my endurance power], I still am unable to comprehend much about the celebrated game and am still dumb as a Dodo.

But I love this movie, the cast, the dialogues...simply everything! It has a magical feel to it that I can't put my finger to it although there might be several areas where excessive poetic licenses might have been used.

Movies and sports go hand in hand. In India, the people are mad after Cricket so one debutant director created a film called "Lagaan" for the Cricket infested audience and not only did the people like it, it got a nomination for the Oscars as well.

I don't know how many awards the above mentioned film garnered, I don't want to know whether it was critically acclaimed or critically panned...I just know that this one film has touched my heart more than what "Lagaan" did.

Then let it be the part where Coach Boone tells Petey and the others that it isn't a democracy but a dictatorship or the part where Gerry tells Ray that he has to go out of the team, every scene and every line seems factual and not mere acting.

Before I saw this movie, all I could say about Denzel Washington was hearsay; he is a great actor and what did I start saying after I viewed it: he is an amazing actor!

Coming from a country which is supposed to be known as "Unity in Diversity" because of various races and cultures, I have observed that sometimes there is hardly any unity at all. It just takes one careless tossing of a matchstick and the whole country burns with hatred and rancour.

That sports is a hose to these glowing embers and true sportsmen are more than teammates is one of the many things that i learnt from this movie.

What else did I learn from this movie? well, I learnt to cry too...after watching scores and scores of romantics and warfare sagas, my eyes which had gotten numb finally got an exercise and I really enjoyed the experience.

Like I said before the start of the article, I can't distinguish between a Quarterback and a Line back [In fact I even had a doubt as to two Quarterbacks made a Halfback] but I certainly can gravitate towards a brilliant movie.
