3 Traits Every Good NFL Offensive Lineman Must Possess

Joe FitzhenryJun 6, 2018

The offensive line may not be the most glamorous position on a football field, but it is arguably one of the most important in the NFL.

We may only notice these guys when they make a mistake that leads to a sack or tackle for loss, but when those negative plays happen, you certainly are aware of their presence.

I, like most football fans, don't always cheer for the linemen after a huge run or a pass that takes a while to develop. Perhaps it is time we should.

This article will take a look at three key traits that all good NFL offensive linemen must possess.

1. Intelligence

1 of 3

It may seem a bit strange that this isn't a physical trait, but intelligence alone can be the single biggest factor in determining the difference between a good or great offensive lineman.

On each and every play, the offensive line must have a full understanding of not only their individual assignments, but also that of the guys they line up next to.

This ties into the fact that they must know the exact play call so they can properly execute it. This includes knowing the hole that the runner is taking, where the pass is being thrown and knowing the snap count, among other responsibilities.

Piecing together a couple of perfect blocks can result in a big play. That's why intelligence is so crucial to the position.

2. Short-Term Memory

Similar to a pitcher in baseball, an offensive lineman must be able to quickly erase a mistake from his memory.

Whether it was a missed assignment or allowing a sack, linemen need to possess that mental toughness in order to succeed.

Letting one or two mistakes bother you can ultimately hinder your play. This is vital considering there are 6'4'', 300-pound defensive linemen coming at you.

3. Size, Strength and Quickness

This may seem like the most obvious one, but it still plays a huge role when discussing what all great NFL offensive linemen must possess.

Offensive linemen are usually the biggest and strongest players on the team. Being at least 6'3'' and 300-plus pounds is commonplace in today's NFL.

Quickness may be the most vital physical trait when it comes to being a successful lineman.

Exploding off the line of scrimmage is necessary on every single play. It allows you to get into the proper position to meet the defender before he gets to the quarterback or running back.
