Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen: Watch Their UFC 117 Classic
There's no better way to prepare yourself mentally for tonight's UFC 148 pay-per-view than watching Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen's instant classic at UFC 117.
Plain and simply, this fight has set up one of the biggest rematches in MMA history.
With his unrelenting pressure and powerful double-leg takedowns, Sonnen brought the fight to Silva like no one has ever before.
Sonnen was a 4:1 underdog heading into the championship clash against UFC's most dominant champion. However, it was Sonnen who fought like he was the man riding a 12-fight win streak, including seven straight UFC title defenses, not Silva.
The challenger landed 31 significant strikes on Silva in the first round alone—more significant strikes absorbed by Silva than he has taken in any other fight.
Sonnen hit Silva more than all of Silva's other opponents combined inside the Octagon. By the end of the fight, Sonnen had landed 320 strikes.
As the fight went into the deeper rounds, the feeling of Silva finally meeting his match in the UFC was overwhelming.
Silva made his strides here and there with some leg kicks and unorthodox strikes, but Sonnen would somehow, someway get Silva to the ground and inflict his patented ground-and-pound.
That is, until Silva pulled off the unthinkable in the fifth and final round of the fight. With less than two minutes remaining in the bout, Silva mustered up the strength to gain wrist control and throw his leg on top of Sonnen's head.
In a last attempt to recapture his title, Silva caught him in a triangle choke, and Sonnen was forced to tap out. It would be like if one team was losing by 50 points and somehow threw a Hail Mary to win the football game with seconds left in the game. It was nothing short of extraordinary.
Here's your chance to relive that magical night before the UFC's most anticipated rematch of all-time.
