Ohio State Football Recruiting: Urban Meyer Must Go After 5-Star DB Vonn Bell

Andrew KulhaJul 5, 2012

Urban Meyer has already re-shaped the perception of Ohio State football and restored a ton of legitimacy, but he could make his biggest statement by going out and getting one more 5-star player to add to his 2013 recruiting class.

Meyer has done a great job so far with his current recruiting class—highlighted by 5-star cornerback Cameron Burrows—but according to Chad Simmons of Scout.com another 5-star defensive back, Vonn Bell, is narrowing his list, and Ohio State has made it through to the next round of cuts:

"

Vonn Bell is the no. three ranked safety in the country according to Scout.com and he recently trimmed his list down to seven schools. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas, and Vanderbilt made the first cut for Bell.

If Meyer could bring in a 5-star safety to go along with the class he's already assembled in his first year mind you, he would send shock waves through the Big Ten.

Heck, he would send shock waves through the college football world.

We've all known that he's a good recruiter, and I don't think many doubt that the Buckeyes' football program is in good hands, but even the most optimistic of fans would be shocked with two 5-star players in one recruiting cycle. Again, this is his first recruiting cycle with the program; I don't think that can be overstated.

Just for shock value alone, Meyer must go after Bell.

Statement-making aside, think of the boost it would bring to the football product as a whole. The Buckeyes already have 10 4-star commits on board, plus their 5-star defensive back in Burrows.

Think how good the Buckeyes' future defense would be with just Burrows and potentially Bell alone, not to mention the five other 4-star defenders in the 2013 class.

Meyer could be in the process of building a defense that could not only dominate in the Big Ten, but help him compete for national championships. Say what you will about it, but defense does indeed win championships.

Bringing in a talented player like Bell could put this class over the top from great to exceptional, so Meyer must go and try to get him.

The interest is obviously there, now Meyer needs to make sure Ohio State stays on his list for good.
