Tottenham Hotspur Transfer News: Gylfi Sigurdsson Can Shine at White Hart Lane

Dan TalintyreJun 1, 2018

Tottenham Hotspur's latest signing Gylfi Sigurdsson is an excellent addition to the club ahead of next season.

Sigurdsson chose the North London outfit over Liverpool after being impressed by the team's plans for the future, and if the latest reports are to be believed, those plans have the 22-year-old midfielder starring for Spurs.

In fact, Tottenham believe he can be an improvement over Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, who is likely to leave the club over the summer transfer window.

According to Mirror Football, Spurs officials believe that the Icelandic midfielder can have more impact in his first season at the club than Modric had last season, particularly since they have former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas at the helm.

Modric never scored more than six goals in a season since arriving at White Hart Lane in 2008. Meanwhile, Tottenham believe that Sigurdsson can improve on his seven-goal haul from last season with Swansea City with better players around him and better management in place.

With Villas-Boas at the club, Tottenham could seriously challenge once again for a top-four spot in the English Premier League. They are strong enough right across the park, and with Sigurdsson in the middle, they are once again a team to watch out for.

Sigurdsson told MBL (via Goal.com) that squad depth was one of the key reasons he chose Spurs over Liverpool or another club.

"

After careful consideration I liked Spurs best. The team has world-class players in their ranks and they play good football, which I like. I was impressed with the club's plans for next season and the coming years.

There is clearly great ambition at Tottenham and the club intends to do big things. It is a pleasure to see that Gareth Bale has signed a new contract.

I like him [Andre Villas-Boas] and the ideas he has. He has faith in me and I'm looking forward to working under his leadership.

"

As a result, he could shine in the middle of the pitch for Tottenham and could be the key factor behind a resurgence in the English Premier League next season.

Spurs are likely to look for another central midfielder and striker to complement the addition of Sigurdsson, according to Goal.com. Should those pieces be picked up, the club will have a genuine chance to challenge once again not just in the Premier League, but right throughout Europe.
