Detroit Lions: Why Winning Cures All Wounds

Connor MuldowneyJun 2, 2018

Just three short years ago, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.  This may not seem like a big deal, but it changed the city of New Orleans forever.

Just four years before that Super Bowl victory, Hurricane Katrina rocked the state of Louisiana and left New Orleans in shambles. The city was left underwater and the people of New Orleans were devastated. They needed something to come together for and build around, and the Saints were that something.

The city of Detroit is not in the best shape and the people of the city also need something to cheer about. No, obviously there was no hurricane that hit Detroit, but the city has been in bad shape for decades and is in the middle of a rebuilding effort.

Detroit can take notes from New Orleans because they were knocked down and it only took a football team to restore spirit and lift a city. Detroit is headed in the right direction and their football team is a big reason for that.

It Reuinites a City

Detroit needs something to cheer about after decades of downfall. The recent recession has not helped the city known as 'Motown' either.

Detroit is a sports city and for the past decade, the Lions have made Detroiters more upset than happy. This past season, the Lions finished the season with a winning record and made the playoffs for the first time in over 10 years.

People from Detroit came together every Sunday, and one Monday, and cheered for one thing. They wanted a Detroit Lions victory.

People that may never be friends in real life packed Ford Field and became a family. The success of the Lions has done positive things for the city and has had a large part in reuniting Detroit.

Puts the Pride Back in Detroit

Detroit is a city based on pride. For years now, the city has lost a little bit of that pride. The Lions were awful, the fans were ashamed and the economy was in shambles.

Today, Detroit has something to be proud of, many things actually. The Lions are a team on the rise, the fans are coming to games in record numbers and the economy is slowly gaining ground.

The city is proud of their football team and even more important, the city is proud of the direction that it is headed in. It may seem far-fetched, but the effect that a professional football team can have on a city that has been knocked down is incredible.

Look what the Saints have done for New Orleans and now the Lions are doing the same for Detroit. The Lions are definitely restoring the roar.

Gives Detroiters a Break from Reality

Detroit is not a place that people from different states would make a vacation destination. The city has it's black eyes, but it also has it's beautiful areas.

Overall, the city is not in the best shape and the citizens have been feeling that for a while now. In the fall, the people of Detroit now have something to look forward to every Sunday.

Every Sunday for at least a couple hours, the people of the city can forget about the negative aspects of their lives and focus on having a good time. The Lions haven't had a team good enough to change the culture of Detroit since the Barry Sanders' days.

This may be the start of something great.

Boosts the Economy

4 of 4

Let's face it, the Detroit economy is struggling right now and with football season coming up, the economy looks to be on the rise.

Last season, the Lions were successful enough to bring in fans from across the country to see their team take on the surging team. Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears was especially successful. The city was buzzing about the game for days and it was sold out.

The Lions' victory over the Bears created even more of a buzz across the country. Everyone was starting to take notice of the kind of party that Lions' fans can throw at Ford Field. It was an extremely successful game and brought thousands of dollars to Detroit.

If the Lions can create this much buzz every Sunday, games will sell out on a regular basis and local businesses will see a boom. This will be the start of a Detroit wound being healed.
