Newcastle United Transfer News: Is Matheiu Debuchy Coming to St. James Park?

Newcastle United are reportedly close to agreeing on a deal with transfer target Matheiu Debuchy, after having their earlier offer of £5 million rejected by the defender's current club Lille.

According to the Metro, Newcastle will reopen discussions with the defender when he returns from his holiday later this week, with Magpies boss Alan Pardew keen to wrap up a deal with Lille.

With Danny Simpson seemingly on the outs at the club, Debuchy would be a great signing for the club and would continue to establish Newcastle as one of the tougher sides in the Premier League.

The club are likely to face competition from Inter Milan, who are rumored to be interested in a replacement for veteran defender Maicon, though Newcastle are confident that Debuchy will snub the Italian club for a move to St. James Park.

It was reported earlier last month by the Journal that Debuchy wanted to move to Newcastle over any other club in the transfer window, and it is believed that his interest still remains with the Magpies as long as they increase his current contract at Lille.

The defender would consolidate Newcastle's back four, and with Tim Krul continuing his fine form for the club, could turn the Magpies defense in to one of the most competent units in the English Premier League.

Newcastle no doubt have the ability to score goals with the likes of Papass Cisse and Demba Ba showing their prowess in attack last season—the addition of Debuchy could continue the Magpies' incredible rise to prominence in the league.

They finished only four points off a Champions League position last season, and should Newcastle wrap up a deal with Debuchy in the summer transfer window, could make a serious challenge for a top-four spot next season.

Debuchy should be available for less than £10 million, and should be actively pursued by the Magpies in the transfer window as their top transfer target.
