Wimbledon 2012: Day 9 Scores, Results and Recap
Day 9 of Wimbledon 2012 delivered some great tennis and served as the set-up to two highly intriguing semifinal matches on the men's side of the draw.
The morning matches went just as one would expect them to as No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic easily blew by German opponent Florian Mayer in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. Djokovic looked dominant as usual in hitting 50 winners to Mayer's 14, and he was able to close out the match rather easily as Mayer was simply outmatched throughout.
Meeting Djokovic in the semifinal will be old rival Roger Federer. Federer turned in an equally dominant performance in his quarterfinal matchup with Russian opponent Mikhail Youzhny as he won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
Federer showed he is ready to bring his "A" game against the favored Djokovic in the semifinals as he only made 13 unforced errors in the match.
With both Djokovic and Federer advancing to the semifinals, the two will play each other for the 27th time. Federer owns a 14-12 advantage in their series, but Djokovic has won the last three meetings.
In terms of entertainment, it doesn't get much better than a Djokovic-Federer semifinal at Wimbledon.
Moving into the afternoon, the other side of the men's draw was battled out a bit more competitively as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray both punched their tickets to the semifinals.
Tsonga took four sets to overcome hard-hitting German Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Tsonga rode a powerful service game to the semifinals as he hit 17 aces and won 80 percent of his first-serve points.
Hometown favorite Murray will once again get a crack at advancing to the Wimbledon finals after going 0-3 in his prior trips. Murray was able to top Spaniard David Ferrer after a grueling match that went four sets and saw a nearly 30-minute rain delay.
After dropping the first set to Ferrer 6-7, it appeared that Murray may not play aggressively enough to win, but he went on to win the next three sets 7-6, 6-4, 7-6. The English Murray came through much to the satisfaction of the Wimbledon crowd and now will face Tsonga as his final obstacle standing between him and a Wimbledon final berth.
