Wimbledon 2012 Scores: Day 9 Winners Who Will Advance to the Semifinals
Day 9 from the Championships at Wimbledon produced some predictable results on the men's side, as the four highest seeds left in the gentlemen's draw all won in less than five sets to advance to the semifinals at the All England Club.
The results set up two epic semifinal matches on Friday, which will feature a six-time champion of the grass-court Grand Slam, the world No. 1, the hometown sensation and crowd favorite as well as the French underdog with a massive serve.
So, who will advance?
Here are Day 9's big winners set to survive the semifinal stage on Wimbledon's Centre Court.
No. 4 Andy Murray Over No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
The winner of Andy Murray vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday will certainly head into the Wimbledon final as the underdog against whoever wins between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Murray made his fourth consecutive semifinal at the All England Club on Wednesday with a four-set win over David Ferrer, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Tsonga successfully earned his second straight Wimbledon semifinal berth with a similar four-set win over Philipp Kohlschreiber, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Neither player has ever made a Wimbledon final, so Friday's showdown will certainly add to the winner's legacy.
The edge has to lay in Murray's corner, though, as the Scottish star will have the crowd on his side throughout the match. Although Tsonga's serve packs a punch on grass, Murray has been fine-tuning his game for a while now, and is without question ready to challenge for his first career Grand Slam title in 2012.
No. 1 Novak Djokovic Over No. 3 Roger Federer
The world No. 1 rolled through Florian Mayer in the men's quarterfinals, taking him down in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. Djokovic is the defending champion at Wimbledon, and looks to be the clear favorite now that Rafael Nadal has been knocked out of the tournament.
Djokovic will take on Roger Federer in Friday's semifinal. Federer beat 26th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets on Day 9, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
Djokovic has only beaten Fed 12 times in 26 career tries. The younger Serbian will prevail in the end, though, as he currently has the edge on Fed, having beaten him in straight sets at last month's French Open.
Although Federer is a six-time champion of Wimbledon and an undeniable force to be reckoned with on grass, Djokovic is healthy and leagues more athletic than the 30-year-old Fed. This semifinal match has five-set potential, but it is hard to imagine Federer surviving Djokovic on Centre Court.
