Arsenal Transfer News: Why Gunners Must Not Waste Time Selling Robin Van Persie

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

Robin van Persie has decided not to extend his contract with Arsenal, so the best move the team can make is to cut its losses and sell its star.

The Dutch forward announced his decision on his personal website, saying in a letter to fans:

"

I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days. Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.

I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.

Regardless of his intention with the message, van Persie comes across as arrogant and better than the rest of the team. If this is the case, Arsenal would be better off without him.

The Gunners have spent the offseason attempting to build a better team that can compete in the English Premier League and other tournaments. They acquired strikers Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud to improve the offense. According to ESPN, they are linked to talented midfielder Yann M'Vila to help on the defensive side.

With these moves, Arsenal should become one of the top teams in the EPL. However, van Persie apparently does not believe the team is working towards winning trophies.

Teammate Paul Merson believes that the striker will regret his decision, saying he will be "slaughtered" by fans. He states that van Persie has already "burnt his bridges."

If this is the case, there is no reason he should remain with the team during the upcoming year. There will certainly be interest in one of the best scorers in the world, so the team should sell the player while they have the chance. That way, they can reinvest the money into the club for the future.

This is not an ideal situation for Arsenal. The team would have been in position to be a contender for trophies next season and beyond if their star player wanted to stay. Unfortunately, that is no longer an option.

The only way the team will be able to get through this situation is to sell Robin van Persie.
