Serena Williams: Veteran Star Shows She Still Has Plenty Left in Tank
Serena Williams has not won a Grand Slam title in over two years, but the veteran still has a lot of wins left in her.
Williams has been on the downslide for the past couple of years. The 13-time Grand Slam champion was on her way up the list of greatest female tennis players of all time, but injuries and age have slowed down her dominance.
The low point was in last month's French Open, where she did not even make it out of the first round.
However, Williams is turning it around at Wimbledon. In the place where she has had plenty of success, the four-time winner has reached the semifinals with a solid chance to win it all.
This did not seem to be the case at the beginning of the week. The No. 6 seed needed tiebreaks in the third set to win her matches in rounds three and four. Fortunately, she stepped up her performance when it matter most.
In the quarterfinals, she defeated defending champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets. Williams was dominant from beginning to end with 13 aces and a very impressive serve throughout.
If this type of Serena Williams comes back, the rest of the field is in a lot of trouble.
The competitors left are all much younger, the oldest being 24-year-old Angelique Kerber. They all have good agility, but nowhere near the experience that Williams has.
In the semifinals matchup against Victoria Azarenka, Williams needs to continue her great serving ability and control the match against the younger competitor. Azarenka won the most recent Australian Open, but has only reached the semifinal round one other time in a major tournament.
The other side of the bracket has combined for only one semifinal appearance as well.
Williams is still one of the most talented females in the world. Her raw power is often too much for opponents to handle. With her skill, she can take home her fifth Wimbledon title with many more to follow.
