Wimbledon 2012: Projecting Who Will Survive Men's Quarterfinals
Day 9 of the 2012 Wimbledon Championships promises to produce some intriguing results and future matchups for fans of tennis.
All eight remaining men will be in action, including defending champ Novak Djokovic and crowd favorite Andy Murray.
Six-time winner Roger Federer is primed to make a statement on the Fourth of July, however, as he'll look to crack the semifinals with a win and set up a can't-miss clash with the world No. 1.
There is plenty to get excited about on the men's side at Wimbledon as the quarterfinals get underway on Wednesday.
Here's who will survive the round of eight and make it to the semifinals in 2012.
Novak Djokovic over Florian Mayer
The No. 1 seed has made it look easy through the tournament's first four rounds, dropping just one set so far. On Wednesday Djokovic will face off against 31st-seeded German Florian Mayer, who has never been further than the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
Considering that Djokovic was already the class of the field heading into Wimbledon this summer, the second-round upset of Rafael Nadal will only increase the defending champion's odds of bringing home the hardware at the All England Club this July.
Roger Federer over Mikhail Youzhny
Six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer should steamroll into the semifinals at the All England Club on Wednesday, as he will take on Russian tennis player Mikhail Youzhny, who is in the midst of his deepest run at the prestigious Grand Slam event.
Youzhny is also the same age as Federer—they are both 30—providing neither with a distinct advantage in terms of endurance and overall athleticism.
Sure, Federer has struggled with a few nagging injuries throughout the first four rounds, but it's nothing that will stop him from reaching the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
Andy Murray over David Ferrer
How can anyone not like Andy Murray in this matchup? After all, he has made it to at least the semifinal of Wimbledon for three straight years.
With the crowd behind him on Wednesday, as they have all tournament long, Murray should be able to survive the 30-year-old David Ferrer, who made it past the fourth round at the grass-court Slam for the first time in his career this July.
Murray has won 80 percent of his matches at the All England Club, though his 24-6 career record at Wimbledon is his best at any major tournament and a sign that perhaps his first Grand Slam breakthrough will happen on the legendary London grass.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga over Philipp Kohlschreiber
World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off his best finish at Wimbledon, in 2011, in which he shocked Roger Federer in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals before losing to Novak Djokovic.
Tsonga has kept the momentum alive in 2012, however, as he can return to the semifinals at the All England Club with a win over 27th-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Like so many other underdogs at Wimbledon, the 28-year-old Kohlschreiber is currently experiencing his best run at London's renowned tennis club.
Kohlschreiber had never been past the fourth round of any Grand Slam tournament before this July, which bodes well for Tsonga in his attempt at getting closer to winning his first career Grand Slam.
