WWE: Why AJ Is Must-See Television

Tom ClarkJun 7, 2018

I dig crazy chicks.

From the moment that AJ was “dumped” by Daniel Bryan, her career went from cute to certifiably insane.

Caught up in a bizarre love triangle with WWE Champion CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Kane of all people, AJ has brought new meaning to the phrase “loony toons.”

Make no mistake though, this is not Bugs Bunny in a dress, this is one gorgeous Diva with a spunky attitude, and a smile that lights up a room.  But, while AJ may have begun her WWE career as just another pretty face, she has proven that she is much more.

AJ has quickly become the centerpiece of this storyline, a storyline that is the focus of fans all over the world.

It’s no easy task, to go from the abysmal Divas division to being thrust into a drama with the top titleholder in the company.  But, that is what AJ has done, and thus far, the consensus among the WWE faithful is that she’s doing a good job.

A very good job.

There is something about AJ, a real innocence in her eyes, and in her expressions.  She looks less like a WWE Diva and more like the small-town girl who sings in the church choir on Sunday mornings.

She is sweet, unassuming, and in many ways, a regular, everyday girl.

But underneath that perky exterior beats the heart of a woman scorned.  And, brother, hell hath no fury.

Manipulated, used, and then discarded by Bryan, AJ became a broken woman, a woman who was left alone, begging for attention, and seeking solace from the pain of betrayal.

Enter CM Punk.

Punk, the laid-back maverick who had climbed his way to the top of WWE, saw a spark in AJ, something that he immediately latched onto.

The pairing seemed right on par with Punk, whose character tended to gravitate to damaged souls in need of repair.  The difference this time, of course, was that Punk, now a babyface, was not looking to control someone.

He had found a friend, someone who took issue with Bryan the way he had, and also found that in AJ, he had a kindred, offbeat, spirit.

But then the Big Red Machine showed up and ruined the whole thing.

Before you could say “awkward,” AJ was playing mind games with Kane, and leaping into his arms to kiss him.

AJ.  Playing mind games.  With Kane.  Still hard to believe, isn’t it?

Kane, the walking embodiment of a horror movie slasher, has injured, tortured and destroyed many Superstars during his time in WWE.

He has faced off against other big men, other dangerous opponents, who brought everything they had to not only defeat the Big Red Monster, but to tear him down mentally.

But, no one, with the exception of the Undertaker, has been able to even make a dent.

AJ, however, threw Kane off his game very early on, and with one kiss, befuddled the beast, totally disarming him, and proving that she was much more psychological in her approach than anyone ever realized.

Therein lies the beauty of her character.  AJ is not crazy because she’s obsessing over Bryan, messing with Kane, or pursuing Punk.  She’s crazy because she can be.

She plays games because it’s fun.  She’s manipulating because it just keeps everyone guessing.

She’s often compared to Mickie James, whose idolatry of Trish Stratus led her to mimic her hero in every way, and soon became more creepy than complimentary.

But, AJ’s warped view of reality does not center around one person.  She is an equal-opportunity psycho, a girl whose expressions have now completely morphed from cute to downright wacky.

And, the best part about all of this?  She’s making it work.

AJ is believable.  She is very real, and it’s for that reason that she is so perfect in this role.  Watching her skip around the ring without a care in the world, all the while trying to predict what she will do next, is becoming more fun every week.

And, whenever she is on camera, she owns the audience.

AJ is beginning to hit that sweet spot that Punk hit last year, the one in which fans can’t get enough of her.  She is now must-see TV, and every time she speaks, her promos make the rounds online as fans continuously sing her praises.

Bottom line: she’s just fun.

It’s hard to know where this will all end up.  Kane looks to have washed his hands of AJ, but that could always change.  Punk seems to the point of walking away from her, but so far has not.  And, Bryan?

Personally, my money is on AJ secretly still being involved with Bryan, and this whole thing will lead to a screw job on Punk.

But no matter what the outcome, I for one am having fun with this one.  It’s good to see a Superstar breaking out, and enjoying the spotlight.  And, it’s even better to see the fans respond to it the way they have.  It’s likely just begun to get interesting.

And, half the fun in getting to the end is just getting there.

Long live crazy chicks.
