LeBron James Publicly Attempts to Get Ray Allen on the Miami Heat
LeBron James likes to flaunt his Calipari recruiting tactics from time to time. On this occasion, he's posted a doctored photo of Ray Allen in a Heat uniform on his Facebook page with the caption, "This looks damn good to me."
We already knew that Miami wanted Ray Allen. To woo the Celtic shooting guard south, the Heat must offer more than money. Miami can likely only sign Allen under the mini mid-level exception, which amounts to roughly three million per year.
Ray Allen could probably find a better offer elsewhere, possibly even in Boston. Speaking of which, asking Allen to go against his old team is likely asking a lot.
I'm not sure that such a move would work out well for Miami. It's struggled to get production from veteran shooters. If it weren't for the NBA Finals, we'd recognize the Shane Battier and Mike Miller signings as immense failures in the aggregate.
Ray Allen will be 37 by the start of next season, and certainly won't help Miami's athletic, swarming defense. His production has been slowly trailing off as the years have passed, with Ray notching a 14.8 PER last season despite shooting .453 from deep.
It's not clear that Ray Allen would help the Heat, but they certainly think he can. And they're convinced enough to publicly make Allen feel wanted.
