Wimbledon Scores 2012: Recapping Men's Draw Entering Quarterfinal Action

Ian HanfordJun 5, 2018

The men's draw in Wimbledon 2012 is coming down to the cream of the crop. With eight players remaining, a handful of favorites have emerged.

The final eight competitors on the men's side are predictable for the most part. The one glaring vacancy is Rafael Nadal, who was eliminated after an unfathomable loss to Lukas Rosol in the second round.

Quarterfinal action is upon us. Let's give a brief recap of each remaining player's road to this point.

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic has dropped just one set in four matches up to this point. Radek Stepanek took the first set in their third-round tilt, but Djoker dominated him with three straight 6-2 sets after that.

With Nadal out and Florian Mayer looming as his quarterfinal matchup, Djokovic's draw looks very good at this point.

His play has been predictably good, and a potential matchup with Roger Federer in the semifinals is his only real roadblock.

A victory over Viktor Troicki in the fourth round gave Djokovic a chance to warm up for the quarterfinals with minimal effort.

Florian Mayer

Mayer has had a much tougher road than his quarterfinal opponent Djokovic. He was taken to five sets in the second and third rounds, and that could take a toll on his stamina at this point.

He scored a very solid win over Robert Gasquet in the fourth round in four sets. He is a strong server, but he will need to pull out all the stops to knock Djokovic off his perch.

Mayer has never advanced past the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam, and that won't end this year.

Roger Federer

Federer almost had his road to a seventh-career Wimbledon title derailed by Julien Benneteau in the third round. He dropped the first two sets, but rallied back to win three straight.

In the fourth round, Federder disposed of Xavier Malisse rather easily. He looked like his old self, and his groundstrokes were on point.

If Federer's stamina holds, expect him to collide with Djokovic in the semfinals.

Mikhail Youzhny

Youzhny's run may end against Federer in the quarterfinals, but he has performed admirably. He won a back-and-forth match with Denis Istomin in the fourth round, but he found a way to triumph over the Uzbekistan native.

His best victory came in the third round over Janko Tipsaveric. It took four sets, but Youzhny was consistent throughout the day.

It took Youzhny seven tries to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, but he's finally here. Now, he must face Federer.

David Ferrer

Ferrer has plowed his way through tough competition in his last two matches. He defeated Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro to advance to the quarterfinals.

Ferrer's elite quickness and athleticism propelled him to a dominant victory over del Potro in straight sets on Tuesday. He is hotter than anyone in this tournament because of the level of competition he's faced.

If I'm Andy Murray, I'm worried.

Andy Murray

Murray reached his fifth straight Wimbledon quarterfinal with his victory over Marin Cilic on Tuesday. Cilic was a stiff test, but Murray dispensed of him in straight sets.

Murray has had a tough road to this point. Marco Baghdatis and Ivo Karlovic pushed him to his limit, but he managed to prevail in five sets.

He's notorious for coming up short, and he will have his work cut out for him against Ferrer in the quarterfinals.

Tsonga's serve-and-volley style is a dying breed, but it's served him well thus far. He scored a huge victory over Mardy Fish on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Prior to that he didn't receiver much of a test, but Guillermo Garcia-Lopez gave him a bigger-than-expected test in the second round.

He will need another solid performance to advance to the semifinals.

Philipp Kohlschreiber

Kohlschreiber managed to defeat the scorching-hot Brian Baker in the fourth round to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in his Wimbledon career.

He's easily the most overlooked player remaining in the field. Given that he's never reached this point in a Grand Slam I can't see Kohlschreiber defeating Tsonga, but crazier things have happened.

The eight remaining competitors are locked in place for the men's draw. At this point it's tough to pick out a definite favorite, but Djokovic looks very good through four rounds of action.
