The Doctor's WWE SmackDown/Great American Bash Recap List: The 149 Things We Saw

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 7, 2018

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to my weekly SmackDown recap list. This week we have a special live show which is dubbed The Great American Bash.

The GAB was once a WCW PPV which was heralded as their version of SummerSlam. Rather than do away with the title completely, it looks as if WWE is using it as a subtitle for SmackDown.

In case you didn't notice, I took the awesome photo which was created for me by Natasha Farley and added the Bash logo since this is a special event. I also adjusted the longer headline for this event.

WWE is using this opportunity to celebrate Independence Day a day early and give fans an extra dose of SmackDown goodness.

I always appreciate my loyal readers, but for those of you who are new, each week I recap SmackDown with a long list.

The entries are made up of equal parts observations, humor, recap, play-by-play, revelations, speculations, questions, answers and anything else I notice during the show. I sometimes comment on commercials, too, just because I get bored during them.

I try and interject some fun into these lists, so I hope you have fun reading this week's list of the 149 things we learned, loved and hated from the show.

1. So I get home today to find that a power surge caused my Dish receiver to fry. Luckily I had a Comcast box I was able to activate in about five minutes so I will still be able to do the recap. Yes, I am that dedicated to keeping these up.
2. Am I the only one who thought the opening video looked weird? It was like it was overlaid with a different video. Maybe someone slipped me some LSD when I wasn't looking.
3. The WWE superstars are shown partying backstage. Yoshi translates something Natalya, who looks insanely good, says into Japanese for Hunico for some odd reason.
4. Teddy walks in and welcomes us to the show.
5. He says Eve is going to clean up any mess that is made by the party and we pan over to see her in the milk maid outfit Teddy used to wear.
6. Santino tries to light the BBQ but Kane walks up and magically does it for him.
7. That was a creative way to include his fire powers into the segment.
8. A 20-man battle royal to see who the GM is next week will be held tonight.
9. Michael Cole hypes a special interview with AJ for later on.
10. Ricardo Rodriguez brings out Alberto Del Rio.
11. A clip of Del Rio attacking Sin Cara from Raw is shown as he enters the ring.
12. ADR talks about how he will beat Sheamus for the title.
13. I wonder how long it will take him to interrupt?
14. He makes a comment about legally entering the country and not illegally immigrating. Are they in Arizona?
15. Del Rio approaches some fans in the audience, demanding their "papers."
16. Del Rio wants security to come remove someone, who says "This is not Arizona, this is Texas!" to a big pop.
17. Sheamus comes out and attacks ADR. I guess the answer to my previous question is about two minutes.
18. Ricky tries to jump on Sheamus but he gets planted on the ramp by the Irishman.
19. Del Rio hits a big kick to Sheamus while he is distracted and then he starts pounding on him.
20. Ricky wants ADR to smash Sheamus under the hood of the car, which Del Rio does several times.
21. If that was a full weight car hood and not a prop they added on, then I have to imagine it hurt Sheamus.
22. After the break, we see that Sheamus was busted open a bit from the attack.
23. Khali's music hits and he comes out with Layla.
24. I can't help but think about the commercial after Raw where it was suggested that Khali may give Vince McMahon a prostate exam. It was a bit disturbing.
25. Nice! Antonio Cesaro and Aksana are out to face them.

26. Aksana looks amazing in red, or black, or any color really.
27. I never realized how tall Cesaro was until he stood next to Khali.
28. Khali uses his power to push Cesaro in the corner but Cesaro hits a chop block and takes Khali down.
29. Cesaro tags in Aksana, who gets in Khali's face. Layla takes her down.
30. I am now jealous of Layla's right hand after she spanks Aksana a bit.
31. Layla ends up hitting her neckbreaker for the pin and the win.
32. Total waste of Cesaro but I will never be upset to see him get any screen time with how little he has been used lately.
33. Teddy runs into Cody Rhodes backstage who says he has been granted another Money in the Bank qualifying match tonight.
34. Teddy says he gets to select the opponent and it will be against someone who is already in the MITB match, Christian.
35. Seeing Teddy in that apron makes me want some BBQ. Too bad there isn;t a decent BBQ joint within a decent distance from my house.
36. If WWE was smart they would have booked The Patriot in a match tonight. He could have squashed Heath Slater or one of Ryback's opponents and made everyone chant USA.
37. Ooh! Maybe Jim Duggan will be here. USA USA USA Hoooooooo!
38. Another Raw flashback is shown of Nitro spilling the beans about Mick Foley winning the WWE title and how it actually made fans switch over to WWE.
39. That is something I do not think anyone else can claim. He literally made over half a million people switch channels simultaneously. That is a true testament to the way Mick broke down barriers against the so-called prejudice against average-looking guys. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
40. Cody Rhodes is out next to face Christian.
41. Rhodes takes the early lead and gets a pair of near falls which clearly were not going to win the match.
42. Christian slaps the taste out of Rhodes' mouth.
43. Rhodes hits the Disaster Kick for another near fall.
44. Rhodes looks up at the briefcase in frustration as we head to commercial.
45. I don't know if it is because it is live instead of pre-taped, but SmackDown has a different feel tonight despite having the same format as always.
46. Why am I just realizing that the voice of the red M&M is the same as the voice of Fry from Futurama! Billy West has his voice in just about everything.
47. Rhodes is still in control with a hammerlock upon returning and Cody turns a reversal attempt by Christian into a slam.
48. Christian turns things around with a missile dropkick.
49. Damn! Christian hits a running dropkick on Rhodes while he was on the bottom rope and I have to believe that Rhodes has the breath knocked out of him a little bit.
50. Rhodes tries for an Alabama Slam but Christian turns it into a pinning combination for another close call.

51. Rhodes tries to take the cover off a turnbuckle and Christian hits the reverse DDT for a near fall.
52. Decent match so far. I like the pace.
53. Rhodes stops a spear but missed the Disaster Kick.
54. Rhodes turns a Killswitch into a Cross Rhodes and gets the win.
55. So we now have six in the MITB match for SmackDown.
56. Other than Santino and Tensai this match has a really great lineup.
57. Ryder asks Teddy if he can be the DJ for a bit and despite listing N'Sync and Justin Bieber on his playlist, Teddy says OK.
58. Heath Slater comes in but he is driven off by Ryder, who plays Brodus Clay's music, which brings out Clay and the Funkadactyls to do some dancing.
59. Another MITB qualifying match is up when we return.
60. Alex Riley gets the jobber's entrance for his match against Dolph Ziggler.
61. Vickie gets decent heat when she introduces Ziggler. Better than she got last night, anyways.
62. Ziggler stole some teal trunks from Darren Young for this match.
63. Riley hits a nice dropkick right off the bat and almost gets the win.
64. Ziggler comes right back and starts working Riley over.
65. Nice. I love when Ziggler does the headstand/headlock.
66. Booker brings up how Riley used to have a lot of momentum.
67. Riley starts to come back a bit and tries for a lifting DDT but Ziggler breaks free, only to have Riley role him up for another near fall.
68. Ziggler hits a strange looking Zig Zag for the win.
69. Ziggler makes seven for the MITB match. SD's match is shaping up to blow Raw's out of the water.
70. Cole is in the ring when we return from the break and he brings out AJ for the interview he promised us.
71. AJ skips her way down to the ring in black and pink attire. A very Hart Foundation sort of look for her.
72. Cole calls her sanity into question right away and he interupts AJ when she tries to talk.
73. I guess she jumped the gun because we get a series of clips from Raw featuring AJ.
74. Watching the moment when she pushed Punk down onto Bryan through the table still entertains the hell out of me. This is, by far, WWE's most interesting storyline since Punk's big promo.
75. Cole asks AJ what she was thinking, but he answers for her and says she wasn't thinking.
76. He calls her a troubled little girl and that is when the smile leaves her face.
77. Wait. How old is AJ? Cole called her a teenager.
78. Cole asks if she has thought about pursuing a real man. I am guessing he thinks he would be acceptable.
79. Oh yeah. He is hitting on her.
80. Hahahaha! Cole says "You could have all of this." and he holds open his jacket. I lost it for a second there.
81. Daniel Bryan comes down and starts talking down to Cole, calling him a sexist bully.
82. Looked it up. AJ is 25. Cole's an idiot.
83. Bryan says he knows AJ will do a great job as ref before saying he knows that she did not mean to put him through the table as well.
84. Punk's music hits and he comes out to a huge pop from the crowd.
85. AJ looks at Punk with evil eyes as he walks down the ramp.
86. Hey! Punk is wearing Chicago Bears colors! Being a Chicago area resident, I whole-heartedly approve.
87. Punk orders Cole to leave the ring with authority.
88. Punk says he is going to be honest with her, he is worried about her because of her mental state.
89. Bryan says Punk is BSing everyone and that he really cares about AJ.
90. Punk drops the mic and AJ gets between them. AJ lays a huge kiss on Bryan as Punk looks on, confused out of his gourd.
91. As Punk leaves AJ grabs him and gives him a big kiss too. Sloppy seconds, anyone?
92. Where's Cole to say "Where's my kiss?"
93. AJ skips to the back, clearly happy with how she just played both of these guys like a prized fiddle on the Cahulawassee.
94. What was I thinking? A Deliverance joke? I have gone too far.
95. Santino comes out to the ring after the break and Drew McIntyre, Hunico and Camacho are already at ringside.
96. Santino brings out his first partner, Sgt. Slaughter. Nice.
97. YES! The second partner is Jim Duggan! I knew WWE couldn't resist bringing him out for the Fourth of July.
98. Camacho and Sarge start off and Santino tags in quick only to get grounded by Camacho.
99. A USA chant starts up as Hunico comes in and gets a near fall on Santino.
100. D-Mac comes in to get another near fall on Santino after a textbook suplex.
101. Does anyone else find it funny that a Canadian pretending to be from Italy is the main babyface in this match?
102. Duggan comes in to get a quick pop before Santino hits the Cobra for the win.
103. This match was nothing more than an excuse to have some legends come out, but I don't really care. I love Duggan and Sarge and for them, I am willing to put up with some silliness.
104. R-Truth is backstage with Little Jimmy at the party when Damien Sandow comes up.
105. He talks about the founding fathers and he and Ryder have another encounter.
106. Sandow attacks Ryder, but Ryder turns the tables and tries to throw the bowl on punch on him only to hit Eve.
107. Haha! Cole says she looks like Carrie. I guess my Deliverance joke doesn't look so bad now.
108. Nice to see Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks are in the ring.
109. Dammit. They start talking about Ryback, which means one of them is about to job out.
110. I guess no one was listening when he asked for three opponents since now he is facing just one.
111. Hawkins gets in a few hits and locks in a headlock but Ryback drops him quick.
112. The Goldberg chants start up as Hawkins avoids one clothesline but gets caught with another.
113. Ryback hits his finisher for the win.
114. OK, I am bringing back the time predictions game. Make you predictions below for how long Ryback's next match will be to the second and the closest person will get a shout out on Monday's recap.
115. I swear, whoever is in charge of the commercials for Syfy tonight should be fired. Every single commercial break we have had has seen at least one commercial get cut short when another one starts.
116. Donald Trump shows a clip of when he upstaged Vince on Raw by raining cash down on the crowd.
117. Some actress from a new Syfy show is apparently at ringside.
118. Teddy comes out next and thanks everyone before bringing out everyone for the 20-man battle royal.
119. I love how Cole corrects Teddy when he says Royale instead of Royal.
120. "You know what they call a Quarter-Pounder in France? A Royale with cheese." They don't really, but I love that movie.
121. Are they seriously going to give everyone their own entrance? This is going to take forever.
122. Hopefully they get them all out of the way during the commercial by just playing the SD theme and having everyone come out in a single-file line like they usually do for televised Battle Royals.
123. Justin Gabriel is out first at the hands of Big Show.
124. I am just going to list eliminations since this will be insane. If something awesome happens I'll list it.
125. Big Show throws out Brodus Clay
126. Big Zeke Jackson is out. I forgot he worked there.
127. Khali is out from about five superstars.
128. Zack Ryder puts Sandow out of the match.
129. Rhodes throws Santino out.
130. Where is Ziggler? I didn't see him.
131. Big Show eliminates Rhodes and Kofi at the same time before we head to commercial again.
132. There's Ziggler.
133. The ring clearly has less people, but I have no idea who got eliminated during commercial.
134. Punk and Bryan go out at the same time.
135. Nice. Kane chokeslams Cena and Big Show.
136. ADR, Tensai and Ziggler surround Cena and start teeing off.
137. Superman comes back and puts them all down before eliminating Del Rio.
138. Cena throws Tensai over before Big Show puts Cena out of the match.
139. Show throws Christian out.
140. Interesting. Kane eliminates Show and Ziggler at the same time and we're down to Ryder and Kane.
141. Kane is punishing Ryder until Ryder hits a Broski Boot in the corner.
142. Ryder low-bridges Kane and wins the match.
143. I guess Ryder is the GM for SmackDown next week.
144. Eve will be Jell-o wrestling next week if Ryder has his way.
145. I thought tonight's show was a lot of fun.
146. I always enjoy seeing Duggan and Slaughter make a random cameo.
147. AJ managed to make the love triangle even more complicated tonight, which I did not think would be possible after Raw.
148. Ziggler and Rhodes qualifying for MITB were definite highlights for me.
149. I know it would be a lot harder and more expensive, but WWE should always do SmackDown live. Every time they do I feel like it is a better show.
