Wimbledon 2012 Scores: Breaking Down Monday's Action

Brooke JordanMay 31, 2018

As the seventh day of Wimbledon 2012 comes to an end, tennis fans were yet again treated to an action-packed day full of surprises.

The weather served as a major factor, forcing the suspension of play in several matches. However, under the closed roof of Centre Court, several new story lines were created.

Here are the highlights of some of the key matches.

Sabine Lisicki (15) Defeats Maria Sharapova (1) 6-4, 6-3

1 of 6

Sabine Lisicki certainly showed she was on a mission.

After her loss to Sharapova in last year's Wimbledon semifinal, the German sought her revenge by blanketing her Russian opponent in straight sets. Led by her strong serving, Lisicki was able to get an early jump on Sharapova and gain the upper hand in both control of the points and the match's momentum.

The newly anointed No. 1 seed looked off her game from the beginning. As her unforced error count increased so did Sharapova's frustration, which led to even more costly mistakes. This, coupled with Lisicki's hard-hitting winners, is what led to the end of Maria Sharapova's road for back-to-back majors.

Sharapova will now take her position as the latest elite to have an early exit in England. While the upset of Rafael Nadal on the men's side sent shock waves across the tennis world, Sharapova's loss is like any other, and once again signifies the inability to establish domination over a top-tier group of players in women's tennis.

Victoria Azarenka (2) Defeats Ana Ivanovic (14) 6-1, 6-0

2 of 6

In just over an hour, Victoria Azarenka quickly handled her business and sent Ana Ivanovic packing.

Everything seemed to be working and falling into place for the No. 2 seed who had only six unforced errors compared to 19 winners. The Belarusian has been very quiet during her run in England thus far, being seemingly very efficient in her play and cruising by her opponents.

As the highest ranked player left on the women's side the target is now on her back. With a victory on the lawns, she can easily regain her No. 1 world ranking that she lost right after the French Open.

Serena Williams (6) Defeats Yaroslava Shvedova 6-1, 2-6, 7-5

3 of 6

After an easy first set, Serena Williams lost control in the second and had to fight until the very end to pull out the third and final game.

Williams had been looking dominant and unstoppable, blowing balls by her competitors left and right. However, she hit a tough obstacle today. Unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova was able to break the No. 6 seed and show just how vulnerable she is.

Even though she had to conquer adversity, Williams is still looking like a favorite to hoist the trophy, especially now with Sharapova out.

Petra Kvitova (4) Defeats Francesca Schiavone (24) 4-6, 7-5, 6-1

4 of 6

After dropping the first set, Wimbledon's defending champion fought and clawed her way back to victory. She was able to outlast Francesca Schiavone in the second set and blew her out in the third.

Petra Kvitova looked sluggish in the first set and had a few breaks not go her way. However, she did not give up, flipped a switch and powered herself back into the match. She was able to breakdown her opponent and survived a tough mental and physical challenge.

The No. 4 seed has slid under many people's radars as a contender to defend her title. She has been managing her matches well and had not struggled until now.

This match against Schiavone proved that Kvitova is a major force to be reckoned with, and that she can stand up and battle anything that is in front of her.

Roger Federer (3) Defeats Xavier Malisse 7-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

5 of 6

After surviving a major scare is in previous match, many wondered how Roger Federer would recover and fare against Xavier Malisse in the next round.

After a back-and-forth battle in the first set that Federer would eventually win, the No. 3 seed cruised in the second and started off well in the third. However, his back began bothering him, causing him to call out a trainer and eventually lose the set. The Swiss was able to fight through the pain and pull out the victory.

The sight of FedEx in pain shows that the men's side of the draw is now really wide open. It will also open up more questions about if this is the downslope of one of the greatest tennis player's careers. His back is now his enemy and another opponent on the court.

Grass is Federer's specialty, and its softer ground could be very forgiving. He should not be completely discounted yet, but his upcoming match will be his true test.

Novak Djokovic (1) Defeats Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-1, 6-3

6 of 6

Novak Djokovic has continued his cruise through the rounds of Wimbledon.

He was pitted against his Serbian teammate and doubles partner, Viktor Troicki, but did not let that distract him from handling his business efficiently. The No. 1 seed continues to demonstrate the worthiness of his ranking and why he is the favorite to win the title.

With Nadal out and Federer hurt, Djokovic is the only healthy "Big Three" player left. If the defending champion keeps his dominating play up, he should have no problem adding another major to his collection.

However, in a wide open field of contenders anything can happen, and, as proven in the French Open, Djokovic is capable of being broken.
