2013 NFL Draft: 6 Linemen Who Will Dominate the Trenches

Scott CarasikJul 2, 2012

The best way to win in the NFL is to build the trenches. There are quite a few top-notch players in the 2013 NFL draft who will help lineman-needy teams come the 2013 season.

In order to win, the lines have to be superior. No team can win a Super Bowl without some dominant linemen on at least one side of the ball. In the past two Super Bowls alone, the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants had ridiculous defensive lines. The New England Patriots always have awesome offensive lines.

The 2013 draft is stockpiled with talent all across the lines, but these players are the ones that should dominate easily in the college game and turn that into a successful professional career.

DE/OLB Jackson Jeffcoat, Texas

1 of 6

The name that stands out when watching Texas isn't Alex Okafor. It's Jackson Jeffcoat.

No. 44 flies around the field and uses his ridiculous athleticism to make offensive lines pay, and he was able to create game-changing plays against the Texas A&M offensive line that features quite a few pro prospects. He also has the ability to play in coverage from a two- or three-point stance.

Jeffcoat is going to be dominant once he is used in a proper zone blitz scheme and could be scary in overload blitzes as a defensive end/linebacker hybrid.

OT Chris Faulk, Louisiana State

2 of 6

Chris Faulk is a true monster at left tackle. While most men who are 6'6", 325 pounds, get stuck on the right side, Faulk has quick enough feet to play the left side. His quickness and strength are good enough to play both sides in the pros, but he will do best as a pass-protector.

Faulk does a good job of keeping guys off his own body and away from his quarterback and extending his arms. His dominance is derived from the complete lack of pressure people can get when rushing from four-man fronts. Once he starts to understand the three-man fronts better, he will be truly special.

DT Kawann Short, Purdue

3 of 6

Kawann Short is the prototypical three-technique in the draft. He's 6'3" and 310 pounds and compares favorably to a Kevin Williams coming out. Short has quick burst out of his stance and uses his hands well. He isn't the strongest player in the draft, but good technique puts him towards the top.

What will lead him to dominance are his intelligence and instincts. He is versatile enough to slide around a formation and play either the 3-4 DE in the five-tech or the 4-3 UT in the three-tech, but his best bet in the NFL is to play in the middle of a defense.

OT Ricky Wagner, Wisconsin

4 of 6

Wisconsin is known for its dominant offensive linemen. Ricky Wagner is a 6'6", 322-pound left tackle at the college level. His projection right now is as a dominant run-blocker who will likely have to switch from the left side to the right side in the pros.

His versatility combined with a projection as a top run-blocker will lead him to be a Pro Bowl caliber right tackle in the NFL and a late first-round pick.

DL Margus Hunt, Southern Methodist

5 of 6

Hunt is a 6'7", 288-pound defensive end for the Southern Methodist team. He was an Estonian track and field star who has converted his strength and agility into a dominant defensive end. Hunt has been predicted to have a 4.6 40-yard dash by Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.

He is the kind of guy who can come in and throw offensive linemen around with his long arms and great explosion off the line. Hunt will bring his dominance to an offensive line in the NFL and he should be able to take on a role similar of the Giants' Justin Tuck.

OL Barrett Jones, Alabama

6 of 6

Jones is a 6'4", 305-pound monster on the offensive line that can play any of the five offensive line positions in the NFL. He is the most intelligent lineman in the SEC and is someone who can dominate defenders with his strength and technique.

He was the Outland Trophy winner as a left tackle and will be sliding to center this year where his leadership will possibly earn him a repeat. Jones will be a top offensive lineman in the NFL and is someone a team could build around on the line.
