How Far Can Uconn Really Go (Big East Tourney)?

Michael McCurryMar 10, 2008

It's that time again. As soon as the calendar hits March, I have just three things on my mind: Irish soda bread, college basketball, and...o yeah, college basketball.

There is nothing in this world quite as exciting and entertaining as March Madness. From the final regular season game all the way to the final buzzer at the Final Four, there are comeback stories, buzzer-beaters, the favorite rolling on and the unthinkables. But all you Huskies fans know that this is the greatest thing that has  came to the United States since French Fries.

I'm not just here to express my love of the greatest sport in the world. I'm ready to get down to business and let you know just what the Huskies will do come Madison Square Garden time.

 BIG EAST TOURNEY

No matter where you look in this year's Big East Tournament bracket, there are upsets just waiting to happen.

Every team has a legit shot of making a run in this thing with the exception of Cincinnati (cannot win anywhere out of the state of Ohio) and Seton Hall (cannot win anywhere, period). The 8-9 matchup, this year featuring 'Nova and Cuse, could easily take the winner of that to the semifinals or higher.

The winner gets Georgetown, the almighty number one seeded Hoyas, right? Wrong. Against Villanova this year, Georgetown escaped by having a touch fall called against Nova with 1.2 seconds left 94 feet away from the basket. Can you say bulls**t? And Syracuse upended Georgetown for the second year in a row at the Dome. With 'Cuse riding on the highs of having fans at MSG and confidence that they can beat anyone at anytime (2003, anybody?) I would not be suprised to see them win a couple of games and then make the Big Dance.

As for UConn, I think we got one of the easiest draws. West Virginia will beat Providence, and that is a fact. This is the one upset that many people probaly think will occur with Providence over WVU, but it will not happen. First of all, Providence relies too heavily on three point shooting. WVU does as well, but they could still mix it up time to time with Wellington Smith and De'Sean Butler. So after West Virginia wins to advance to the quarters, UConn will dominate them once again.

Even if the Mountaneers do shoot the lights out, UConn is too dominant inside and always finds ways to win (check out the UConn-USF game). UConn will advance against either Villanova or Syracuse, and go to the finals. Once there I believe they could win, but see them losing a heartbreaker to either Notre Dame or Marquette (Lousiville will get upset by seventh seeded Pittsburgh). UConn will earn a No. 3 seed in the Dance.
