Gabby Douglas: Dynamic Gymnast Will Lead USA to Team Gold

Timothy RappJun 2, 2018

Gabby Douglas won the USA Olympics trials on Sunday night. Now, she'll look to do the same at the Olympics and along the way lead the United States women to team gold.

And I believe she'll do it. But I'm not the only one. According to the Associated Press (via ESPN), this American squad should be the favorites heading into the London Games:

"

Led by the 1-2 punch of Douglas and [Jordyn] Wieber, this will be the strongest team the Americans have had since 1996, one that will be not just favored but expected to bring home only the second Olympic team gold. McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman, who were with Douglas and Wieber on the U.S. team that won the title at last fall's world championships, also made the team, as did Kyla Ross.

Maroney is the world vault champion. Ross, not old enough to be on last year's world team, is a two-time U.S. champion.

"I guarantee one thing: The truth is going to come out on the Olympic Games," said Bela Karolyi, whose wife, Martha, is the national team coordinator. "And the truth is that we are solidly the first place team. There's no question about that."

Keep in mind that Wieber was the favorite heading into this event, and she is widely considered to be one of the top contenders to win the overall competition at London.

That makes Douglas' emergence all the more positive for this United States team. And let's not forget that the United States is the defending world champions.

London, here we come!

Sure, the team will be without recognizable faces like Nastia Liukin and Alicia Sacramone, each failing to make the team. But this squad is incredibly strong nonetheless, and Douglas and Wieber are each capable of taking home the overall gold individually.

Having two competitors that strong headlining your team makes you a favorite heading into the team competition for sure.

Few events at the Olympics are as compelling as the team gymnastics competitions at the Summer Olympics. Sure, Olympic sprinting is more thrilling and swimming is always exciting, but the team competition at the Olympics has offered some truly fascinating moments throughout the years.

Who could forget Kerri Strug's brave vault or the silver earned by the team in 2008? And when else do you really care about gymnastics?

This year is going to be special for this U.S. women's gymnastics team, I can feel it. Led by Douglas, these ladies are going to make us proud.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets want Dwight Howard to just get traded already, too.
