MLB All-Star Game 2012: Picking Early Favorites for the Home Run Derby

Shawn BrubakerJul 2, 2012

Even though the final rosters for the Home Run Derby have yet to be set, picking favorites can never come too early.

On Sunday, National League captain Matt Kemp selected the NL's participants, including himself, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Gonzalez and Giancarlo Stanton (per CBSSports.com).

American League captain Robinson Cano, who is the defending champion, will announce his team Monday, but it will likely include Jose Bautista.

We also know that Josh Hamilton will not be participating in the derby (per MLB.com), as he hopes to avoid injury by limiting himself during the All-Star week.

The AL features the four leaders in home runs this season in Bautista, Hamilton, Adam Dunn and Curtis Granderson, but that doesn't necessarily give it the edge in the derby.

Most reports list the NL's Giancarlo Stanton as one of the most powerful hitters in the major leagues, so he will certainly be a name to watch.

That makes Stanton one of the favorites, to be certain. Cano is also a name to watch as the returning champion, and Jose Bautista should also make some noise, assuming he participates.

Despite being the NL captain, Kemp could be hard-pressed to make a major impact in the derby, as he has not had the opportunity to get into a rhythm since he's been on the DL. He could be the biggest disappointment of the day.

Kemp was also a disappointment last year, getting bounced after the first round, hitting only two home runs.

Expect improvement from Kemp, but not enough to seriously contend for the win, or even advancement into the second round.

The second round should consist of Bautista, Cano, Stanton and Beltran, with Cano grabbing an early lead.

Stanton will make up ground in the second round to take the lead, with Stanton and Cano making the finals.

Ultimately, Stanton's raw power will be too much for Cano to overcome. Cano will only be able to watch as Stanton unloads 500-foot dingers throughout Kansas City.

With Stanton's explosive bat, this year's Home Run Derby should be sure to please fans across the country, as he's sure to blast several awe-inspiring home runs on his way to a victory.
