Real Madrid Transfer Rumors: Blancos Don't Need Luka Modric to Win Spanish Liga

David DanielsJul 2, 2012

Real Madrid needs nothing.

While the Whites seem to have moved on from Kaka, failing to replace the midfielder wouldn’t be disastrous for their pursuit of back-to-back Spanish Liga titles. They’re simply too talented for the loss of a single player (not named Cristiano Ronaldo) to cripple them.

Just a week ago, it looked like Real Madrid was about to get even more stacked. The Daily Mail reported that they were primed to offer Luka Modric a contract worth £30 million. According to ESPN, Kaka has likely played his last match wearing a White uniform, so Modric would be an ideal replacement. But not so fast.

Mirror is reporting that the transfer has hit a snag because Nuri Sahin isn’t interested in playing for Tottenham and Jose Mourinho would rather not send a straight-cash offer with Modric’s £40 million price tag.

But even if the deal is dead, they’re fine. Just because the acquisition would be ideal, that doesn’t mean it’s necessary.

Real Madrid claimed last season’s La Liga crown by bulldozing everything in their path. They only lost two games all season long. The Whites boasted an insane 89 more goals scored than they had given up.

No La Liga football club fields a trio of strikers as talented as Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain. Each finished the year as a top-five goal scorer.

While Real Madrid has a strong, balanced attack, their greatest rival, Barcelona, only has a one-man wrecking crew in Lionel Messi. They didn’t have a single footballer score more than 12 goals in Primera Division action besides him.

Again, while Modric would help the Whites take an even tighter stranglehold on La Liga, he isn’t a must-have addition. Guti doesn’t believe he’s even worthy of playing for them. ESPN reported that the former Real Madrid star said of Modric:

"

He hasn't even been the key man for Tottenham. I don't think he's done enough to play for Madrid. I would go for David Silva in this position. He's ideal for Real Madrid: young, talented with potential, and has achieved great things with Manchester City and Spain.

"

Of course, according to the Daily Mail, Silva would cost the Whites £80 million. But if they don’t want to spend that type of money, it isn’t a big deal. Like Modric, Real Madrid doesn’t need Silva.
