Olympic Trials 2012: Yohan Blake's 200 Makes Usain Bolt Yesterday's News

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Usain Bolt who? With a dynamic Jamaican Olympic Trials, it is all about Yohan Blake now. The latest sign of Blake's emergence is his win in the 200-meter dash on Sunday.

Blake crossed the line in 19.80 seconds. Usain was right on his heels at 19.83, but Bolt isn't supposed to be looking at the soles of anyone's shoe. This is the man that has spent the last four years being considered the unquestioned king of the sprint. It's hard to call him that right now.

This is Blake's second win over Bolt at these trials. The first came in the 100, and Blake had an even more comfortable win in that event—he posted a 9.74 to Bolt's 9.86.

Blake's superiority over Bolt is only part of this story. The other part is that neither of these great sprinters are close to touching their best times. We are talking about the two fastest men in the history of the 200. Bolt holds the world record at 19.19, and Blake's personal best is not far behind at 19.26.

You know what is far behind? That would be their times posted in these trials. In the 2008 Beijing Games, Bolt could have moon walked the last 10 meters and posted a time in the 19.8 range.

These guys may very well crank it up a notch for London, but as it is now, American Wallace Spearmon Jr. has to be getting a little excited.

Just before the Bolt-Blake showdown, he won the 200 at the U.S. Olympic Track Trials with a time of 19.82—although it was aided with a plus-2.3 wind.

Wind aside, it is clear that these three are close in this event, which means this is shaping up to be a truly epic 200 showdown in London.
