Wimbledon 2012 Schedule: Complete Coverage Guide to Day 8 Matches
The seventh day of the 2012 Wimbledon Championships was abruptly halted by rain and poor weather conditions.
The men's matches that were in progress (David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro hadn't even begun yet) were postponed until Day 8.
The men will be faced with a three-matches-in-four-days scenario, similar to the one that outraged Rafael Nadal at the most recent U.S. Open.
Players who got to finish before the rain or under the roof on Centre Court, including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Mikhail Youzhny, will have the day off to rest and prepare for their quarterfinal matches.
The male athletes will set out to the courts early to finish their encounters. Richard Gasquet is down a set to Florian Mayer and will play first thing today on Court No. 3.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga looked to be in trouble, down a set and nearly a break to Mardy Fish, who at one point in the second set saw just 18 percent of his serves returned in play by the Frenchman.
He was very much helped by the rain that ensued outdoors, but maybe the stoppage in the match may not have been enough for him to come back. They will be first up on the Court No. 2.
Andy Murray, the home crowd favorite, should have no trouble completing a win over Marin Cilic when he steps on Court No. 1. He is up 7-5, 3-1 and looks to be in control of this affair.
The last men's match to be played is the Ferrer vs. Del Potro faceoff, which will prove to be a challenge for both players. They have been placed on Centre Court at noon (London time).
Which women play in the semifinals will be decided by the end of the eighth day.
Following Ferrer and the Argentine on Centre Court will be Serena Williams vs. Petra Kvitova, which will certainly be a heavyweight slug-fest. After that comes Sabine Lisicki (the German who took out Maria Sharapova in straight sets) and Angelique Kerber, who has looked to be in fine form as of late.
Court No. 1 will provide the other women's competition. Third-seeded Agnieska Radwanska will take on Maria Kirilenko (I am picking the Russian to win this battle) and then Tamira Paszek will look to upset the most likely new world No. 1 player, Victoria Azarenka.
Here is the schedule of play at the Wimbledon Championships.
