2012 NL All Star Roster: Fans Shouldn't Select Bryce Harper in Final Vote

Timothy RappJul 1, 2012

Bryce Harper looks poised to make countless All-Star appearances in his career. But this year, there are more deserving candidates.

Still, it's hard to imagine Harper won't be one of the favorites to win the Final Vote in the National League. Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com has the full listing of Final Vote candidates:

"

This year's Final Vote candidates for the National League are Atlanta teammates Michael Bourn and Chipper Jones, St. Louis' David Freese, Washington's Bryce Harper and Arizona's Aaron Hill. In the American League, it will come down to Kansas City's Jonathan Broxton, Texas' Yu Darvish, Baltimore's Jason Hammel, Chicago's Jake Peavy and Los Angeles' Ernesto Frieri, all of them pitchers.

I understand that Washington Nationals or Harper fans will accuse me of being a hater, but if you objectively look at the numbers, Harper is probably the least deserving option in the National League. Certainly, he and Chipper Jones seem like stretches:

Bryce Harper5636228.2758.822
Michael Bourn7752297.30722.797
Chipper Jones4322296.2940.822
David Freese71354813.2801.812
Aaron Hill74353811.3017.878

In my opinion, the two players most worthy of selecting are Freese and Hill. While it would be awesome to see Jones make the All-Star game in his final season, I don't think he's deserving of the honor over some of the other options available.

The same goes for Harper. As surprisingly good as he has been in his rookie year, he hasn't been better than Bourn, Freese or Hill. As exciting as moments like stealing home against the Phillies have been, they don't trump the consistency of the other options.

If I were a Nationals fan, I'm not so sure I would want Harper earning an All-Star nod. For as much talent as he has—and he has ridiculous talent, make no mistake about it—you worry if too much early success will go to his head.

Harper will have numerous chances in the future. He looks like he has future MVP ability, and he'll probably be the National League's Rookie of the Year if he keeps this up.

But at this point, he shouldn't be an All Star. Hopefully, fans will do the right thing and vote either Freese or Hill into the game.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets want Dwight Howard to just get traded already too.
