WWE News: WWE Compares Raw to Classic TV Shows Like the Simpsons in New Article

Voodoo MagicJul 1, 2012

As reported by WrestleZone, WWE.com has—in advance of the landmark 1,000th episode of Monday Night Raw—posted an article comparing Raw to many classic TV shows:

"

WWE.com has posted a new feature taking a look at some of television's most iconic shows, in comparison to Monday Night Raw, which will celebrate its 1,000th episode on July 23rd.

The article compares WWE's Monday night titan to some of the highest rated episodic shows in history, including Friends, the Simpsons, Law & Order and its own WWE SmackDown!

For those who are wondering, here is the complete list of shows that Raw is compared to: The Simpsons, Law and Order, Seinfeld, Roseanne, Lost, Baywatch, Friends, Doctor Who, Cheers and WWE SmackDown!

What?

I find it amusing that there are some very notable omissions. Namely, every soap opera ever put on TV, many of which have put on over 10,000 shows (and are the most logical comparisons to WWE programming, a.k.a. "the soap opera for guys").

Here are some highlights of WWE's list:

-Compares Homer Simpson and Monty Burns to Austin and McMahon (I guess...Homer and Stone Cold drink beer a lot?).

-Claims that Raw surpasses Law & Order simply because of Raw's longevity (never mind the fact that Law & Order has spun off countless outstanding shows while Raw has spun off...SmackDown?).

-From Cheers: The list compares "Yes!" with "Norm!" (come back and find me when everybody knows Daniel Bryan's name).

-From Friends: It also compares Ross-Rachel-Chandler-Monica to AJ-Punk-Bryan-Kane (though I really would love to see Punk, Bryan and Kane living together and hanging out at a coffee shop).

-Calls Raw better than Lost because Raw's plots aren't as confusing.

I'm not going to get in depth with the comparisons to each show right here—though I would like for any and all of you to read WWE's list and do some comparison/contrast in the comments below—but it seems to me that WWE is trying to compare Raw to these other shows simply based on longevity.

Being around a long time does not mean a show is phenomenal. It means it fills a niche.

Raw has, in its time, been outstanding, but more often than not it fills the same role as the conspicuously absent soap operas: niche programming. It gets you hooked emotionally and entertains you. No Emmy award, no Oscars, just fun.

Thoughts? Do you think any of the comparisons WWE makes between Raw and the listed shows are legitimate? What shows do you think make more sense to compare with Raw?
