Wimbledon 2012 Results: Top Potential Upsets for the Rest of the Tournament

Darin PikeJun 7, 2018

The first two-plus rounds of the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon have led to some surprising results and upsets. With second-seed Rafael Nadal already ousted, there are several other pending matches that could raise eyebrows.

The remaining men's singles third-round matches commence at 11:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.

If the early rounds so far are any indication, there are several more upsets looming at the All-England Club. Following are five matches which deserve some extra upset-potential attention.

Early Round 3 Upsets

1 of 5

There have already been several surprises so far in Round 3

Half of the Day 5 matches ended with a higher-seed losing:

Viktor Troicki (Ser) def. (15) Juan Monaco 7-5 7-5 6-3

Xaiver Malisse (Bel) def. (17) Fernando Verdasco (Spa) 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-1  4-6 6-3

(18) Richard Gasquet (Fra) def. (12) Nicolas Almagro (Spa) 6-3 6-4 6-4

(26) Mikhail Youzhny (Rus) def. (8) Janko Tipsarevic 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-3

Round 3: David Ferrer (7) vs. Andy Roddick (30)

2 of 5

American Andy Roddick has enjoyed some great success at Wimbledon. He's also suffered three difficult defeats in the finals, all to Roger Federer.

Roddick has struggled in recent years, but the comfort of a successful routine and solid play on the grass has led him to some great results. David Ferrer could be his next victim.

"We both won on grass last week in the leadup," Roddick stated in a USA Today article. "I think it will be a high level. You have to play well to beat David. He just doesn't give you anything."

Roddick picked up a wing after a late wild-card entry at Eastbourne, winning his first title of 2012. "Desperate times call for desperate measures. I went from not having won anything to riding out a title pretty convincingly. It was what I needed."

He beat David Ferrer in the fourth round of last year's U.S. Open and will look to upset the Spaniard for the right to face off against the Juan Martin Del Potro (9) vs. Kei Nishikori (19) winner.

While not receiving separate attention, look for Roddick to make a push to play Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.

Andy Murray Making the Finals

3 of 5

The next time Andy Murray could face a higher-seed will be in the finals. Thus, he won't have to "upset" anyone to reach that point, but achieving that milestone would be a major upset all the same.

The host country hasn't had a countryman reach the gentleman's finals since 1938. With Nadal out of his side of the bracket, Murray should be able to taste a partial end to England's futility at Wimbledon.

That could be his biggest stumbling block.

The pressure of a nation rests on Murray's shoulders, and the pressure of major tournaments hasn't exactly been his friend. Despite a solid career and a winning percentage of 77 in majors, he's only reached the finals three times..

He's 0-3 in those matches.

Murray is 8-2 in ATP Masters finals and has an overall finals record of 22-11 in ATP play.

He will need some help should he reach the finals, but just getting there would be a huge boost for his career and his nation.

Round 4: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5) vs. Mardy Fish (10)

4 of 5

The sub-plots of this match are clear and obvious. At last year's U.S. Open, Mardy Fish and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had a contentious conversation regarding the volume of fans in Tsonga's box.

While the intended recipient of the comment isn't clear, Fish stated "I don't speak French, you dumbass."

Tsonga felt the comment was directed at him and replied with, "I don't like you, too."

The match was eventually won by Tsonga, but the results could be different in Wimbledon. Tsonga has been working through a finger injury and could be at-risk in this match.

He has some work still in front of him as his Round 3 match pits him against Lukas Lacko.

Fish will need to get by David Goffin, set for Court 3 on Saturday.

Should both players avoid a Round 3 upset, look for sparks to fly when they step on the court.

Semifinals: Novak Djokovic (1) vs. Roger Federer (3)

5 of 5

Even the mere suggestion that Roger Federer can defeat Novak Djokovic will be enough to send Djoker fans into a tailspin.

Given Federer's strong history at Wimbledon and solid play on grass, I'm suggesting just that.

It would be easy to discount Federer following a near-loss in Round 3. However, the challenge from Julien Benneteau should have him focused and on his toes for the next two rounds instead of looking ahead to Djokovic.

It is hard to make an argument for how Djokovic can be beat. He's the best player in the game and simply isn't losing majors not played on clay.

But Federer loves playing on grass and is very quick on the surface.

Prior to Wimbledon, Nadal said that Federer is one of the best players on the grass courts.

With the confidence one gains from six Wimbledon championships, he will be tough to beat. This will be the first time Federer and Djokovic meet on grass, giving Federer a small advantage.
