NBA's Two Worst TV Play-By-Play Announcers

Al JohnsonFeb 14, 2009

Over the years I've watched quite a few NBA games that are NOT in my area. Heck, we just got an NBA team in Oklahoma City this season and we're thrilled to have them. They are young and hard working and our new coach seems to know what he's doing.

With high draft choices over the next two years we should have a team ready to go to war in the NBA's Western Conference. I see our guys in four or five years challenging for the Northwest Division, fighting it out with Portland who is a couple of years ahead of us in that position.

Like I said I watch a LOT of NBA games. My wife thinks I'm nuts but I am the guy the NBA must have had in mind when they came out with the "I LOVE THIS GAME" promotion. I do LOVE THIS GAME. What I don't love are a few of the announcers in the NBA.

Let's take, for example our team the Thunder. Our ownership hired a guy with NO experience in play-by-play in the NBA. Brian Davis had done a few college basketball games and a few other things but he was a pre-game and post game host for the team when they were in Seattle. That is obviously his role. He is not in any stretch of the imagination an NBA quality play-by-play man.

He just can't seem to get any rhythm and he does not have any idea how to set up his analyst Grant Long. Long is also a first year guy on tv but he is improving. Davis is not. Davis clearly has to go and I hope ownership understands that just because he's not very expensive (he could NOT be expensive...he's AWFUL) does not make him a bargain.

Another guy I just can't stand is Pete Pranica with the Grizzlies. His blog isn't bad but his play-by-play is brutal. He may be worse than Davis which is really saying something. He's been in Memphis for a few years and that's saying something. Maybe he's got pictures of the owner. Who knows, but he's bad!

What I'm most surprised at is not that these guys get hired at all. It's more that they keep their jobs, like Pranica in Memphis. If you've never seen his act you need to tune in sometime. You'll be laughing by the middle of the 2nd quarter.
