The Knicks, Midyear Report
As a longtime (suffering) Knick fan, I'm glad to see they're finally improving.
The way I see it, the real nucleus of the team is David Lee, Wilson Chandler, Chris Duhon, and Al Harrington.
I think it's critical that they sign Lee. Not overpay him, but give him a fair contract. Lock him up for three to five years. Don't think he will ever be a superstar, but he consistently brings it night after night.
Lee gets rebounds, scores moving to the basket. He needs to work on getting a consistent jump shot and dunking more when he is working against any shot blockers.
Wilson Chandler also needs to work on his shooting. Very good finisher, pretty good defender. He needs to be more consistent.
Chris Duhon is a steady point guard. Not flashy, but doesn't turn the ball over like Marbury or Robinson trying to thread the needle.
They probably need to find someone to back him up as he wears down and has been missing his three pointers lately.
Al Harrington is a real scorer. Very athletic, explosive. As far as I am concerned, he is every bit as good a player as Zack Randolph without the attitude.
As for Eddy Curry, two years ago he was scoring at will since there weren't alot of real centers out there who can play him. What happened is anyone's guess. Last year, Curry pulled in and out of the lineup. Injured a good part of this year, Currycould at least keep up his fitness for his 10 mil paycheck.
They need to hang onto him next year, play him increase his value, then trade him. Miami was looking for a center, not sure who they would be willing to trade? Haslem? We could use another athletic forward. (and he can defend)
Marbury? Get rid of the guy already. Wait till March 1 to dump him. Why should Boston pick him up for $2? If we can't get anything for him, don't let him play this year.
Jerome James has two years left in the five-year contract. This guy is a joke. He has played about 15 minutes in three years. He played well against Shaq for three games and he gets $6 million a year? Waste of money.
Every five or six games, Quentin Richardson hits some three pointers, gets some confidence, gets to the basket and scores some points. (Then hits himself in the head...What's up with that?) Every other game he shoots 3-for-10, turns the ball over. He can't post up though he tries. Richardson is too short and gets his shots blocked. He's in the last year of his contract...Bye bye...
Malik Rose gets alot of money sitting on the bench. He will be out of the league at the end of the season.
Tim Thomas is better the second time around. Has been shooting better than expected. Considering how athletic he is, he should be a better player. If he had the heart of David Lee, he could be one of the better players in the league.
Jared Jeffries is a freaky player who can guard nearly anyone. He also can not hit a shot if his life depended on it. His most dependable offensive move is a charge.
I'm still scratching my head over the Danilo Gallinari pick. He's not athletic, has limited moves. He can shoot and plays hard. Will never be more than a second teamer.
What we need is a shooting guard. Eric Gordon? John Salmons? We need someone young who can hit over 40% to 45% of their shots. Outside of expiring contracts, the Knicks don't have much to offer.
Curry? Thomas? Gallinardi? Would move any of these three for the right price. Wouldn't make a trade before the deadline.
We don't need an aging over the hill player like Steve Nash, or an underachiever like Stoudemaire.
Still think that getting under the cap at all costs for a shot at Lebron James is the same plan a four year old would have as a general manager. I would opt for Wade over James any day.
