Wimbledon 2012: Top Seeds That Should Be on Upset Alert in Round 3
The second-round upset of Rafael Nadal proved that no one is unbeatable at Wimbledon.
As the rounds progress, the competition only gets tougher. Seeded players start facing each other, and there are numerous other interesting matchups.
High seeds Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer should be considered safe, but at this point anyone is capable of an upset. Czech competitor Lukas Rosol showed that was the case when he defeated Nadal.
These men are the next ones who should be on upset alert.
Nicolas Almagro
Almagro has risen to the No. 11 player in the world by winning two titles this year and 12 career titles, all of which were on clay.
He has struggled in his career on grass and has never passed the third round at Wimbledon.
Richard Gasquet has had a simple run through the tournament to this point, winning each of his matches in straight sets. He defeated Andy Murray earlier in the year, and he has what it takes to defeat Almagro in the next round.
David Ferrer
One interesting storyline in the upcoming weeks is whether or not Andy Roddick is truly back. Combined with a tournament victory in London last week, Roddick has now won six straight matches.
He will face David Ferrer, who had a solid performance at the French Open. Unfortunately, Wimbledon is his worst career Grand Slam tournament by record and by advancement.
Ferrer has been climbing the rankings and is up to No. 5 in the world, but that might not last long if he cannot continue to win.
Mardy Fish
The top remaining American in the field has struggled through the first two rounds. He needed five sets to defeat James Ward in Round 2, and he has played a total of three tiebreaks so far.
Fish will face 21-year-old David Goffin, who has performed well in the tournament. Goffin reached the fourth round at the French Open, his first career Grand Slam appearance.
If he can keep this momentum going, the youngster could upset a tired Mardy Fish.
