Wimbledon 2012: Federer Survives Scare Against Benneteau to Make Second Week

Martin BaldridgeJun 27, 2012

Until his third round mach against Frenchman Julien Benneteau, Roger Federer had been experiencing an easier than expected run towards the second week of Wimbledon.

Fed dispatched Albert Ramos in the first round for the loss of only three games, and then Fabio Fognini in the second round for the loss of just six.

However, in the third round against Benneteau the Swiss man was two sets to love down; somehow escaping to make his way through to the second week.

4th Round and Beyond

Roger's fourth round opponent is Belgian Xavier Malisse someone who is unlikely to trouble Federer.

Quarterfinals

It was at the quarterfinals stage of this year's Wimbledon that things were supposed to become more problematic for Federer.

When the draw was made, the imposing 6'10" John Isner presented a formidable obstacle to Federer making his way to the semifinals.

But then Isner promptly lost in the first round to Colombian Ajejandro Falla.

Federer's quarter of the draw now includes Denis Istomin and Mikhail Youzhny.

Once again it's hard to see Federer not being able to overcome anything these players throw his way.

Semifinals: Enter the Serbinator

Anyone with a center court ticket for the second Friday of Wimbledon is in for a real treat.

Not only are they likely to see Andy Murray taking on whoever makes their way through the most difficult section of the draw, but in the other semifinal they will witness the potential match of the tournament.

Federer and Novak Djokovic should throw up plenty of entertainment in what may end up being Federer's last realistic chance of making the final.

I'd rate this as a 50/50 match, so don't be surprised to see Federer in Sunday's final against Murray.

A Magnificent 7th?

So, could Federer do it? Absolutely.

Will he do it? Possibly.

Will I be watching? You better believe it. How about you?
