Paris Saint-Germain Picking a Fight with the Old Lady for Italian Starlet

Christopher AlmerasJun 7, 2018

When you are the new kid at school and you want to make a name for yourself quick you can do one of two things. You either pick a fight with one of the biggest boys on the block or you sweep in and take his girl. Paris Saint-Germain is the new kid at the school of big clubs, and they are here to take the other clubs' girls.

After stealing the signature of Javier Pastore from Chelsea last summer, PSG has swept in and reportedly beaten the likes of Manchester City to Napoli’s Ezequiel Lavezzi. If this wasn’t enough, reports by Football Italia are surfacing regarding PSG courting Siena striker Mattia Destro. Destro has been rumored to be attracting attention from Juventus, Inter Milan and Roma.

Destro is a talented 21-year-old striker who spent this past season on loan with Siena during their first season in La Liga. Destro was loaned from Genoa to Siena in a deal that gives Siena co-ownership of the player. Any transfer dealings for the sought-after striker will have to be determined by both clubs.

Mattia had a terrific start to his La Liga career when he scored in the sixth minute of his first start while playing for Genoa. During his loan to Siena, he netted 12 times in 31 appearances to go along with two assists.

Mattia has had success finding the back of the net at all levels. He scored an incredible 15 times in 13 games as a member of Italy’s U19 squad. His scoring touch continued as a part of the Italian U21 team, with five goals in 14 matches. With a history of finding the net against all levels of competition, it is easy to see why many top teams are interested in his services.

For PSG to step in and steal this potential Italian jewel from the likes of the Old Lady would be a coup indeed. Stepping in and wooing some South American studs away from Italy with English clubs pressing the issue is one thing, but taking the apple of the top dog’s eye on their turf is another. If PSG are able to convince Destro to come to Paris, it would speak volumes about Leonardo and Carlo Ancelotti’s continued influence in Italy.

Destro would complete the attack for PSG. Adding his finishing ability with Lavezzi up top would produce the strongest starting forward lineup in Ligue 1. With the abilities of Menez, Pastore and Nene creating chances, defenders in Ligue 1 would lose a lot of sleep this coming season.

PSG may be stealing the girls, but can they pick a fight with the big dogs and win? The Champions League should give us our answer to that question. With the type of players they are capturing, I would not bet against them.
