Wimbledon 2012: Day 2 Scores, Results and Recap
While Day 1 at Wimbledon was defined by big names bowing out, Day 2 featured some predictable results.
All the superstars—Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Serena Williams—advanced with relative ease.
There were a few upsets on the day, though. Nineteenth-seeded Lucie Safarova lost in the women's bracket, while 14th-seeded Feliciano Lopez and 20th-seeded Bernard Tomic were eliminated from the men's draw.
Tomic joined former Wimbledon champion and fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt on the way out. Both lost in humiliating fashion, as Hewitt fell in straight sets to Tsonga, while Tomic broke two racquets and was booed off the court following his four-set loss to David Goffin.
With the two men eliminated, Australia will not have a male representative in the second round at Wimbledon for the first time since 1938.
Here are the other top storylines from Day 2.
No. 2 Rafael Nadal Advances
Nadal struggled out of the gate, losing his first four games to Thomaz Bellucci. He was able to avoid disaster, though, eventually dispatching the Brazilian 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-3.
After being just two points away from going down 0-5 in the first set, Nadal turned things around when Bellucci smashed an overhead backhand into the net. Nadal used his momentum to win the next four games, and after Bellucci imploded in the tiebreaker, the Spaniard cruised to victory.
As ESPN Stats & Info pointed out, Nadal is now 38-0 in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.
"Rafael Nadal won his 1st round match at Wimbledon today. He has never lost a 1st-round match in 38 Grand Slam appearances.
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) June 26, 2012"
He will continue his pursuit for his 12th career Grand Slam title by taking on Lukas Rosol in the second round.
No. 6 Serena Williams Advances
Playing on the same court where her sister Venus lost the day before, Serena Williams prevailed 6-2, 6-4 over 62nd-ranked Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova.
Although the scoreline would indicate an easy victory, Williams had to work for every point. Zahlavova-Strycova frustrated her at times, and Williams was eventually screaming after every point, whether she won or lost.
It wasn't pretty by any means, but Serena did what she had to. The win also separated her from Venus in one historical aspect, as ESPN Stats & Info so kindly mentioned.
"Serena Williams won 1st round match at Wimbledon, her 212th career Grand Slam match win, breaking tie w/sister for most among active women.
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) June 26, 2012"
Now, the four-time Wimbledon champion will be looking to add to her impressive record against Melinda Czink in the second round.
