Wimbledon 2012: Rafael Nadal Will Waltz into Final at All England Club
Rafael Nadal doesn't need help reaching the final at the 2012 rendition of Wimbledon, but he got some thanks to a fortunate draw.
Fortunate draw is an understatement. Nadal has a virtual cakewalk en route to a finals matchup with either Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer.
Yes, he will meet one of the two there.
The talent discrepancy between Nadal and the rest of his bracket is too great for any of his opponents to overcome. Couple that with the fact that he'll be breezing through early-round competitors while his prospective opponents struggle, and you have the perfect ingredients for a finals berth.
Nadal's next opponent will be Lukas Rosol, who is 11-13 this year in singles matches. Rosol is more of a doubles play and will say goodbye to Wimbledon when he meets Nadal.
His Round 3 match will be played against Philipp Kohlschreiber or Malek Jaziri, both of whom played painstakingly long matches against their first-round opponents. Kohlschreiber went five sets and needed three tiebreakers to get past Tommy Haas, and Jaziri needed four sets to beat Jurgen Zopp.
The No. 2 player in the world lost to Kohlschreiber at the Gerry Weber Open, but surely comes into a Grand Slam with a completely different mindset than a minor tournament.
Rafa's fourth-round match is too unpredictable to call, but it will come against a lesser opponent who stands no chance. I know it sounds like I'm just blowing smoke up Nadal's butt here, but when he gets a draw like this, there's no way he's not going to be one of the last two men playing.
Nadal's toughest opponent will be Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, if Tsonga is able to reach the quarterfinals. Rafa has bested Tsonga seven of the 10 times the two have met.
He could then be looking at a semifinal matchup against David Ferrer or Andy Murray, depending on how things pan out.
What I'm getting at here is that nobody Nadal could possibly face leading up to the final is going to be able to get past him. He will prove yet again that he doesn't need clay to finish atop the field once the fortnight at the All England Club comes to an end.
