Roger Federer: 5 Most Impressive Tennis Records

Alex KayJun 4, 2018

Roger Federer is considered by many tennis aficionados to be the greatest player of all time.

He’s certainly earned this lofty distinction in no small part due to the number of records he has shattered during his 14-year professional career.

Let’s take a look at some of the most impressive accomplishments the 30-year-old star has achieved during his still-thriving career.

23 Consecutive Grand Slam Semifinal Appearances

1 of 5

This is perhaps the most telling reminder of Federer’s lasting dominance. From the 2004 Wimbledon to the 2010 Australian Open, there was not a single Grand Slam tournament that Federer did not finish in at least the semis.

Even more impressive, he only lost to Juan Martin del Potro, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Marat Safin during that run, who all went on to win the respective tournament that they defeated Federer in.

Considering the previous record of straight semis appearances was 10, which was shared by Rod Laver and Ivan Lendl, this may be Federer’s most impressive accolade.

Eight Consecutive Years Winning 20+ Matches in Grand Slams

From 2004-2011, Federer won at least 20 matches in Grand Slam tournaments, and this is a testament to his durability and skill as a player, even away from the major tournaments.

The Swiss simply has a passion for the sport and brought his “A” game each and every time he stepped on the court.

No one else has accomplished this feat, and it will likely be a long time before someone else does.

237 Consecutive Weeks at No. 1

It took a ridiculous amount of time for Rafael Nadal to steal the World No. 1 ranking from Federer’s grasp on Aug. 18, 2008.

Federer had smashed Jimmy Connors' record of 160 consecutive weeks and destroyed Steffi Graf’s overall tennis record of 186 weeks at the top of the rankings.

With so many great players in the game today and so many constantly emerging, it will be near impossible for anyone to break this record anytime soon.

23 Grand Slam Finals Appearances

This accolade also comes along with the fact that Federer appeared in a record 10 Grand Slam finals in a row as well.

The 30-year-old has shown a knack for dominating and bringing greatness to the biggest and best tournaments time and time again.

He’s got a firm grasp on this record and will likely continue to add to it before his career is over.

16 Grand Slam Titles

5 of 5

Perhaps the most important record that Federer holds is his 16 Grand Slam titles in the open era. He has edged Pete Sampras by two victories and still has time to separate himself from his competition.

Nadal is second among active players with 11, while Novak Djokovic—despite his recent dominance—only has 5.

It will be quite some time before Federer is overtaken here.
