NHL Hall of Fame 2012: Joe Sakic Headlines List of Inductees

Nicholas GossJun 26, 2012

The new class of inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame includes Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Pavel Bure and Adam Oates, according to The Score.

Sakic was a lock to get a phone call welcoming him to the Hall of Fame, and the other inductees are well deserving too.

The only surprise is Brendan Shanahan not being selected. He should have been a first-ballot selection for sure. Sundin should not have gone in before Shanahan, but it's hard to imagine the current league disciplinarian not receiving the call next summer.

Bure is certainly deserving since he's one of the best pure goal scorers we have ever seen, and didn't play a long career because of injuries. Oates was one of the best players during the 1990s and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Once again, however, Pat Burns and Fred Shero have not been selected for the Hall of Fame, which is a real embarrassment.

"

Brendan Shanahan not getting in on the first ballot is silly, but not the outrage it is that Pat Burns and Fred Shero still aren't in.

Here is a quick look at the accomplishments of the new inductees.

  • Joe Sakic: Two-time Stanley Cup champion (1996, 2001), Hart Trophy (2001), Conn Smythe Award (1996), 1,641 career points on 625 goals and 1,016 assists, 13 All-Star appearances.
  • Pavel Bure: Two 60-goal seasons, three 50-plus goal seasons, Maurice Richard trophy (2000, 2001), 779 points on 437 goals and 342 assists, six All-Star game appearances.
  • Mats Sundin: 1,349 points on 564 goals and 785 assists, eight All-Star game appearances.
  • Adam Oates: 1,420 points on 341 goals and 1,079 assists, five All-Star appearances.
