Detroit Lions Cornerback Aaron Berry Arrested on DUI Charges

Ryan RudnanskyJun 26, 2012

Detroit Lions cornerback Aaron Berry was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol last Saturday morning in Harrisburg, Pa., according to WXYZ-TV Detroit.

Berry, entering his third season with the Lions, also faces two counts of causing accidental damage to an unattended vehicle or property and two counts of failure to stop and give information to law enforcement.

Berry allegedly ran into parked vehicles with his car at the Hilton Harrisburg Hotel early Saturday morning, then began walking away from his vehicle. A witness followed the 24-year-old and reported the incident to local police. Berry was arrested at 4:45 a.m. ET and taken to the Harrisburg Police Department booking center.

Beyond that, Berry allegedly wasn't cooperative with police and refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. He was eventually released and is awaiting arraignment.

The Lions issued a statement regarding the incident on Tuesday, via Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com:

"

Lions statement: “We are extremely disappointed in the reports involving Aaron Berry and the incident in Pennsylvania this past weekend."

Berry also released a statement after the incident, via Paradigm Sports Management:

"

I want to offer a sincere apology to the Lions organization, Lions fans, the coaches and all my teammates for my actions this past weekend. This is not the example I want to set for young people and it’s certainly not what my team and coaches expect from me. I promise to do everything in my power to make sure this never happens again. I understand these are just words and it will be my future actions that ultimately will speak for me.

"

Berry is the fourth Lions player to be arrested this offseason. Running back Mikel Leshoure and offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath were both cited for marijuana possession, while defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been booked on two separate occasions for alleged marijuana possession and DUI.

Leshoure has already been suspended for two games, while Culbreath and Fairley have yet to hear from the league office. As of now, it is unknown whether Berry will receive a suspension.

Berry, who went undrafted out of Pittsburgh, has been with the Lions for two seasons. Last season, he played in 11 games, recording 31 tackles and 11 pass deflections.
