Randall Bailey Set to Make First Defense Against Devon Alexander

Kevin McRaeJun 7, 2018

New IBF welterweight champion Randall Bailey, fresh off a title-winning knockout of Mike Jones, is set to make his first defense against Devon Alexander.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, in comments to BoxingScene.com, said the fight will take place on September 8th and will be broadcast by Showtime. No venue for the fight has yet been decided.

The 37-year-old Bailey (43-7 37 KO) won the title with a stunning knockout of Mike Jones on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley fight.

Dominated for most of the fight, and well behind on the scorecards, Bailey flashed his trademark power in the 11th round to get the victory and his second world championship. It has put him in the position to get at least one more lucrative fight at this late stage of his career.

Alexander (23-1 13 KO), the former IBF and WBC junior welterweight champion, made an impressive welterweight debut in February, dominating the tough Argentine Marcos Maidana.

The fight was expected to be close but Alexander won nearly every round on all three judges' scorecards. He boxed effectively and even showed a willingness to trade shots with the Argentine knockout artist and to the surprise of many got the better of most exchanges.

It was the second consecutive victory for Alexander, after dropping a tough ten-round technical decision, and his junior welterweight title, to Tim Bradley in January 2011.

For Bailey the fight will be the first defense of his IBF welterweight title and Alexander's first title shot in this weight class.
